About the Author
Gary C. Jacobson is Distinguished Professor of Political Science at the University of California, San Diego. He received his PhD from Yale University and has served on the Council of the American Political Science Association and on the Board of Overseers of National Election Studies. Jacobson’s field of interest is American national politics, with a subfield focus on Congress and congressional elections, and his current research is on the electoral basis of partisan polarization in Congress. Among books he has authored or coauthored are Money in Congressional Elections, The Electoral Origins of Divided Government, and The Logic of American Politics.

Jamie L. Carson is Professor of Political Science at the University of Georgia. He received his PhD from Michigan State University, where he was a fellow in the Political Institutions and Public Choice Program, now located at Duke University. Carson’s research interests include American politics with a specific emphasis on the U.S. Congress, congressional elections, separation of powers, and American political development. His most recent book (coauthored with Jason Roberts) is Ambition, Competition, and Electoral Reform: The Politics of Congressional Elections Across Time.

One of a kind source

This is a textbook with an enormous amount of information and analysis. There is useful information on redistricting, incumbents, voting percentages, campaign spending, PACS, contributions, party line voting, voters ratings, party unity, polarization, voter knowledge, opinions, at-risk and safe seats and many other political issues. Gary Jacobson has created a one of a kind source for looking at Congressional Elections and related subjects. Every student of US politics should study this book. Every library should have the latest edition.

At one thousand and eight pages of small print in a thick paperback book, this is the go-to physical format for data, information, or explanation up to the year 2014. With sixteen glossy pages of colored photographs, a few black and white pictures, charts, colored maps, and small paragraph format, this book is targeted for those fascinated with information from America and around the world.

The first fifty pages tabbed the Year in Review are special features that cover top ten news topics, the world at a glance, Ebola outbreak facts, American Veterans, election results, a chronology of events, obituaries, Congress, the U.S. Supreme Court, notable quotes, offbeat news stories, anniversaries, and a time capsule.

The remaining nine tabbed sections relate to the economy and employment, health, personalities, science and technology, consumer information, United States, the world, nations, and sports. The general index and quick reference guide are included in over twenty-five pages at the conclusion.

Using both types of indexes, readers can easily look up data on aviation, disabled people, high schools, Mars, nutrition, quantum physics, Toyotas, yellow fever, or a plethora of memorable and banal events, happenings, or interests, to name a few.

Under the one page “World at a Glance,” there are first-time occurrences, surprising facts, and milestone birthdays. The several pages on chronological events start in November 2013 and offers monthly highlights on a national, international, and general interests through October 2014.

Several portions are done in a chronological order for topics such as the year in review and United States history. Weather conditions, state population, and sports statistics date back to the first record or recent accomplishments in practically every conceivable aspect.

This myriad of information may match an internet search engine trying to find data quickly as it is arranged methodically and precisely. In spite of its small print, the book may challenge Google in accessing answers fast as it gives one source instead of thousands to glean while researching.

Packed with info

Would you like to know all the results for the 2014 Elections? Do you wonder what the top news stories for the year were or how the world changed during 2014? All of these answers and many more are included in this information packed book. Sports, History, Science, and Statistics are just a few of the topics that are covers. Bright, colorful pictures throughout the book add visual appeal.

This thick book would make a wonderful gift for the knowledge hungry person in your life. College students, schools, and the home library would all benefit from having this book on the shelf. My son poured over the book when it arrived and kept reading sections to me that interested him. I was impressed with all of the subjects that were covered and how thorough the information was. Definitely a book worth keeping.

As always, a great reference book, but the Kindle version doesn't make the grade.

I've been a user of "The World Almanac" since the 1980s. Purchasing a paperback copy of this essential reference tool has been for me practically a rite of passage in January of each year.

This year I decided to try a Kindle version of "The World Almanac." I must state that the content of the 2015 edition is a good as ever... news, sports, and world events are current up to the second week of December, 2014. Included are complete U.S. mid-term election results. All information is timely and accurate, as one might expect.

The problem with the ebook version "The World Almanac 2015" is that doesn't adapt itself well to the Kindle format. Pages with regular text look fine, but pages with tables on them are very much hit-or-miss. Some tables show up with nice, neat, properly formatted columns that can be read easily, while others appear in minuscule, almost unreadable fonts and columns that are not aligned properly. The maps section is a total mess. The maps are all turned sideways, and the fonts are so small they're unreadable. This problem is especially pronounced in my Kindle for Windows 8.1 app.

"The World Almanac and Book of Facts" is truly an outstanding reference work, essential for anyone who wants information at their fingertips. However, the Kindle version of this book just doesn't make the grade. My advice: Buy the "hard copy."

About the Author

Nicholas P. Cheremisinoff heads the Industrial Waste Management Program to eastern Ukraine under the United States Agency for International Development. He has nearly twenty years of industry and applied research experience in polymers, petrochemicals, and environmental and energy management in the heavy manufacturing and processing industries. Among his experience includes nearly thirteen years as product development manager and specialist for Exxon Chemical Company's elastomers product lines, and he actively provides consulting for private industry in the polymer technology areas. He has contributed extensively to the industrial press by having authored, co-authored or edited over 100 reference books and numerous articles. Dr. Cheremisinoff received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in chemical engineering from Clarkson College of Technology, Potsdam, New York.

But what are the political consequences of this vast landscape of media choice? Partisan news has been roundly castigated for reinforcing prior beliefs and contributing to the highly polarized political environment we have today, but there is little evidence to support this claim, and much of what we know about the impact of news media come from studies that were conducted at a time when viewers chose from among six channels rather than scores.



Through a series of innovative experiments, Kevin Arceneaux and Martin Johnson show that such criticism is unfounded. Americans who watch cable news are already polarized, and their exposure to partisan programming of their choice has little influence on their political positions. In fact, the opposite is true: viewers become more polarized when forced to watch programming that opposes their beliefs. A much more troubling consequence of the ever-expanding media environment, the authors show, is that it has allowed people to tune out the news: the four top-rated partisan news programs draw a mere three percent of the total number of people watching television.

A little longer and more complex than most texts for the series, this one starts with a common childhood experience, pushing toy cars across the floor--and gradually--introduces ideas such as forces, reactions, inertia, friction, and gravity. That's a lot to explain in a short book, and some of these concepts are difficult to simplify. To her credit, Bradley, the author of Energy Makes Things Happen (2003), does grapple with fundamental concepts rather than taking the easier, more traveled, less-satisfactory road of, say, talking about gravity in terms of "up" and "down" or simply describing its observable effects. Colorful line-and-watercolor-wash illustrations brighten the pages. The final spread offers instructions for a simple activity leading to a better understanding of friction. amazing little book

I found this book to be extremely informative while explaining how forces make things move in a way my 3 year old granddaughter understands while learning myself!!

The pictures are awsome, and keeps any age children's attention. All of the books in the Lets-Read-and-Find-Out Science series have been a valuable tool in teaching and entertaining in my home.

Wonderful science book for kids

I really like the "Let's Read and Find out Science 2" series. These are great science books for elementary school and they are perfect for my first grader. They use familiar examples to introduce basic scientific concepts in a simple but fun way. They are interesting for both kids and adults. I have found them to be a valuable tool to teach these concepts to my kids.

This book about force and movement was fun for the kids.

Schoenbaum's study of the changing images of Shakespeare throughout history broke important new ground; but in the years since this book first appeared many scholars have followed his lead, and Shakespeare studies has progressed by leaps and bounds. Now, Schoenbaum, one of "the heroes of Shakespeare scholarship," according to Wells, has revised and up-dated this classic study of Shakespeare and his biographers, taking account of the most recent scholarship, adding a chapter on "Recent Lives," and abridging certain sections.
Schoenbaum takes us on a tour of the countless myths and legends which have arisen to explain the great dramatist's life and work, bringing the story right up to 1989 with the publication of A.L. Rowse's Discovering Shakespeare. In the new edition, the emphasis is on more recent "lives" of Shakespeare, with information culled from such diverse sources as E.A.J. Honigmann's Shakespeare: The "Lost Years" and Richard Ellmann's Oscar Wilde (Wilde's Portrait of Mr W.H. advanced his theory of the Sonnets in fictional form). Besides fanciful theories such as Wilde's, Schoenbaum covers those who have used blatant forgery to construct an imaginary Shakespeare, such as W.H. Ireland and J.P. Collier (the latter would occasionally add his own verse to the Shakespeare canon), and those who have attempted elaborate argumentation to establish the identity of Shakespearean characters (A.L. Rowse claimed to have identified the elusive "Dark Lady" of the Sonnets). From Ben Jonson, whose celebratory verse opens the First Folio of Shakespeare's complete works (published seven years after his death), to Malcolm X, who denied the existence of a historical Shakespeare, Shakespeare's Lives considers virtually the entire legacy of idolatry, heresy, and speculation.
As before, Schoenbaum submits the documentary record of Shakespeare's life to careful consideration. Like a literary detective, he reconstructs as much of the elusive author's life as possible, considering his family history, his economic standing, and his reputation with his peers. The Shakespeare who emerges may not always be the familiar one (he was less vaunted by his contemporaries than we usually believe, for example), but all of Schoenbaum's claims are exquisitely documented.
Even in this revised and abridged version, Schoenbaum's narrative leaves hardly a stone unturned--from Samuel Johnson, Samuel Coleridge, and Alexander Pope to twentieth-century writers like James Joyce, E.K. Chambers, and Anthony Burgess (whose popular life of Shakespeare appeared the same year as the first edition of Schoenbaum's book). Curiousity about Shakespeare has not subsided since the original version of this classic appeared. This new edition will make the latest lives of Shakespeare available to a whole new generation of the Bard's fanatical followers.

a must for serious lovers of shakespeare

If you love Shakespeare, buy this book--you won't be disappointed. Schoenbaum doesn't discuss the plays, but instead the man who wrote them--or, more specifically, the differing ways that his life has been interpreted. That's right, it's a biography of Shakespeare's biographers, leading us step by step through several centuries of interpreters of the Bard, and the various wacky ways they have interpreted his life. It might not sound compelling, but boy it is. The early portions of the book are good enough, but it really takes off when the author starts to discuss the "Baconian" heretics--authors who have argued that Francis Bacon (or some other aristocratic, and therefore supposedly more intelligent, fop) actually wrote the world's greatest plays. He wonderfully illustrates the bizarreness of the men and women who originated this fanciful claim, and explains how it has unfortunately caught on in the popular imagination. (One of the first "Baconians," the not-coincidentally named Delia Bacon, is a tragically grotesque character worthy of Shakespeare himself.) This is a hefty book that you won't finish in a single sitting, but I still highly recommend it.

Indispensable for Shakespeare Lovers

I first read Schoenbaum a long time ago and was astounded at the way Shakespeare's career had so many different incarnations, from his popularity in his own time to the legendary status David Garrick awarded him, to the love of readers world-wide (including Dickens and Abraham Lincoln), to the "fashions" in Bardolatry that change and morph to this day. I re-read it recently and he remains one of the great Shakespeare scholars of the 20th century. This book is probably more for readers with some background already in Shakespeare's works, but with a little grounding in the art, you will be amazed at the history.

This ample, carefully written, entertaining volume deserves a lengthier review than space permits. It is not only a re-examination of the established facts about Shakespeare's life and career (and those facts remain sparse); it is also a lengthy anecdotal narrative of the successive attempts, beginning humbly in the 17th century and reaching levels of near frenzy in the 18th- and 19th-, to provide a biography, turn legend into fact, forge documents, decipher the works, to imagine, to invent, to exalt or denigrate the personality behind the plays and poems. Schoenbaum's fascination with the motives and temperaments of the individuals behind these efforts is obvious, and he succeeds admirably in making us share his response. A history of how and why the Bible was edited

I read this book after watching the 17 hours of professor Hayes' lectures at Yale Open Courses. Normally I would get bored by watching 24 (Youtube) lectures, but these were so interesting that I also wanted to read the book.

"Introduction to the Bible" covers the development of the religion 1300 BCE - 300 BCE from polytheism to monotheism to the post-exilic prophets. The emphasis on revealing the agenda of the authors of the Bible and the different books of the Bible sought to answer questions specific to the time it was written. In addition to source criticism and redaction criticism of the biblical text, Hayes also use archaeological sources and written sources from other cultures in the Middle East that confirm or contradict the biblical text. The inconsistencies between the different biblical books and authors are used to shed light on how the text changed and developed to fit the political and theological concerns of the redactors.
This is highly recommended and excellent scholarship.

Follows Yale Old Testament course

This excellent book follows the marvelous Yale free online course in the Hebrew Bible. I started viewing the lectures, then discovered the book, and have now raced ahead to the end of the book leaving a few lectures to view. The book and lectures present a widely accepted scholarly approach to the Hebrew Bible found in analogous courses at numerous other colleges. This approach sees the Bible as the work of many minds, with different views shaped by different times and circumstances. The special virtues of Hayes' presentation include faithful representation of scholarly sources, careful selection of material to convey important points in relatively brief compass, and enthusiastic commitment to this subject. The latter is especially evident in the lectures, where one has gestures and facial expressions to complement words. I can't recommend the book and lectures too highly.

For all these writers, Dutch art provided a model for training themselves to look closely at the particulars of middle-class life.

Yet even as nineteenth-century novelists strove to create illusions of the real by modeling their narratives on Dutch pictures, Yeazell argues, they chafed at the model. A concluding chapter on Proust explains why the nineteenth century associated such realism with the past and shows how the rediscovery of Vermeer helped resolve the longstanding conflict between humble details and the aspirations of high art.
