Someone wants Gary Cooper to make a movie badly enough to resort to threats, blackmail, and murder. But when private eye Toby Peters arrives on the scene, things start to get interesting. High Midnight, Kaminsky's (Bullet for a Star, Audio Reviews, LJ 11/1/94) 1981 comedic mystery, is set during the golden days of Hollywood. With news of World War II in the background and the price of Ann Page spaghetti at two cans for 13?, Kaminsky's private eye wends his way through the Hollywood hills, hunting for the killers and running into the likes of Ernest Hemingway. Along the way, Toby stumbles over corpses, avoids stray bullets, and tries to keep from being turned into a Kosher hot dog by some menacing East Coast thugs. Despite these promising elements, though, the story line and characters are weak. Narrator Christopher Lane makes a gallant effort to infuse some life into this audiobook but to little avail. About the Author
Stuart M. Kaminsky (1934–2009) was one of the most prolific crime fiction authors of the last four decades. Born in Chicago, he spent his youth immersed in pulp fiction and classic cinema—two forms of popular entertainment which he would make his life’s work. After college and a stint in the army, Kaminsky wrote film criticism and biographies of the great actors and directors of Hollywood’s Golden Age. In 1977, when a planned biography of Charlton Heston fell through, Kaminsky wrote Bullet for a Star, his first Toby Peters novel, beginning a fiction career that would last the rest of his life.�Kaminsky penned twenty-four novels starring the detective, whom he described as “the anti-Philip Marlowe.” In 1981’s Death of a Dissident, Kaminsky debuted Moscow police detective Porfiry Rostnikov, whose stories were praised for their accurate depiction of Soviet life. His other two series starred Abe Lieberman, a hardened Chicago cop, and Lew Fonseca, a process server. In all, Kaminsky wrote more than sixty novels. He died in St. Louis in 2009.

Not bad
By Loves to Read (A Cozy Booknook)
I enjoy the Toby Peters series but this is not one of my favorites. The plot seemed thin and to move rather slow as well as having a few characters that didn't seem to belong. This leaned more heavily toward the research material rather than story. Overall, still a nice read.

HIgh Midnight is a bit short

I like the author, Kaminsky and the Toby Peters series is a lot of fun. High Midnight is not bad and not fabulous, the story line is a bit skimpy and the plot line very thin but overall it is not bad. Best to get this from the library rather than buy it.

Which is in Christ Jesus

Recognizing what it means that Christ, the One who holds all things together, is in us, is such a crucial topic which is not discussed in modern times as much as it is in the New Testament letters, in my opinion. So I was pleased to see a book on this subject from Bethel church. There are many rich, thought-provoking statements and stories in this book. I took off one star because I was longing for a bit more discussion of the many New Testament statements about being "in Christ" and what that means for daily life.

Permission to be great! God trusts you!

Great book! There were some powerful revelations, but written in a down to earth approachable way. I love the part about God trusting us. He's not afraid of us, He can handle anything we do. Just like a good Dad who cheers his kids on and covers them when they mess up. He knows we're not perfect after all. He trusts us because He lives in us. Permission to be great!

Reading Christ In You has opened up a whole new world for me! Eric Johnson's writing style is clear and easy to read, and so empowering. The truths in this book have shed light on so many lies I've been believing about how God sees and interacts with me. He talks about God trusting us to make decisions and pursue our passions, because Christ is in us, and we have the Spirit of wisdom because he lives in us and through us! Eric Johnson writes, "Whatever challenge you face, the solution is in you and around you because wisdom through the Holy Spirit is in you. Christ is in you."

He also drives home the idea of Christians, firmly planted in their identity in Christ, living out the call to love people by letting their lives be their ministry. He dismantles the belief that the only valid ministry and calling is in a church setting. He writes that God adores us and wants to work with our passions and dreams, not in spite of them! God gives us permission to be great and do big things for him. Eric Johnson dismantles the fear that a lot of us have of dreaming of huge exploits with God, all the while worrying that people will question our motives, by saying, "Confidence is driven by what it can give, and arrogance is motivated by what it can gain."

There is so much wisdom packed into this little book, I'm sure I'll be going back through each chapter to fully grasp it all. I highly recommend it!

What if NAZI's ran the FDA and AMA?

We take our freedoms for granted, but there is very little Liberty in the USA when it comes to Medicine. This book reads like a cross between Science Fiction and THE FIRM/PELICAN BRIEF. Only it is not fiction. Haley's book is exceptionally well researched (I know because he contacted me while writing it. Helooked into the Pauling cure at [...] and decided not to use it. Possibly because so far there are no public court records.)
I could not put the book down. The stories in Haley's book, backed by court documents, are stories the AMA and FDA thought you would never learn and hope you will soon forget. You will not forget, but you will understand why there is such a strong Alternative Medicine and Health Freedom movement in America and world-wide. There are heros in this book. And there are people who in their greed and depravity have caused the premature death of millions upon millions. People that head major Institutions. It can't be true. It can't be true you will find your self saying over and over and over. Each case worse than the last. You begin to understand that the people who decide what is "legitimate" science might not have your best interest in mind. Duh!?!

If you ever get a disease and the total runaround from doctors, it is common for you to be totally frustrated. We have the worst medical system in the world and the most expensive. When profit runs the show, we lose out. READ THIS BOOK AND WEEP.

Skeptics inquire within

Hasn't anyone read this book in 2008?? Where are the recent reviews? Some of the other reviews try to find minor flaws (author recommends some should have got a Nobel Prize, etc..)but what is amazing to me is how the system really works. Like the former president of the AMA that never treated a patient & flunked his boards, yet he rules the country's health care club & throws out a non-toxic cure that works? I have seen the 60-Minutes video clips of Mike Wallace, these things happened. Get it & see for yourself is all I'll say. It contains things you can use today to avoid getting your name on an early death certificate.

I loved it!

I found the book well written and easy to follow. When I first started and realized the hero of the story was in prison because he really WAS a criminal it sort of turned me off but it wasn't long before I fell in love with him right along with the heroine. It's a full length book with an interesting plot--give it a try!

Another humorous contemporary read from Alyssa Kress. I just can't believe these stories are all .99$! For the plot development and characterization you get from Kress her stories are worth even more. I really enjoy the crass humor the hero and unwavering heroine who won't let her town be taken advantage of. The sparkly banter between these two leave your emotions tangled and lead up to a sensual union. In addition to this being a contemporary read, the suspense added by a lone bomber on the run, adds another layer to this story.

As I've mentioned in other reviews, Kress has a talent for weaving together several POVs without confusing the reader. I hope we get some character interviews or holiday novellas from this bunch. Can't wait to read more from this author.

A great bargain read at $.99! on Amazon and other booksellers.

The heroine believes in the goodness of everyone...perhaps a little naive and maybe not. The hero is an anti hero who believes that he is worthless and deserves nothing. Will the beautiful lady change his mind and will the hero in turn change her world? Is anything really possible? Do dreams really come true? Read this great book and find out.

About the Author
Author and accomplished printmaker Melvyn Petterson has exhibited extensively in the US, Europe, and China, and was elected a full member of the Royal Society of Painters, Etchers, and Engravers. He lives in London. Colin Gale lectures on printmaking at several London colleges. His work is exhibited at the Royal Academy, London, and in private collections worldwide.

Making Plates at Home

Many people are interested in printmaking but are limited by their access to studios and equipment. This book does not attempt to tell you how to print without a press, however it tells you which presses work best for each project. There are some suggestions on some presses that you may be able to find or make if you want to print at home, but that is not the author's emphasis. What the author does best is demonstrate some good processes that will help you prepare plates at home. For those who are interested in investigating screen printing, there is also a section on that.

I think this is a great book for someone to include in their printmaking book collection. It does not solve everyone's issues (how many books do?), but it would be great for someone taking a printmaking class who needs the privacy and comfort of their own home when learning to prepare plates. A few of the suggestions are innovative and fun, and will give you a jump start if you are in an artistic slump.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to expand their platemaking practices into new directions, but primarily to the student who isn't totally comfortable making plates in a distracting or crowded studio setting.

lots of quick and easy ways

to print and things to print with. I use it as a way to make sure I have everything before starting. It is great if you need a total kind of resource to remind you of other ways to do what you want to do

Sure wish I had a printing press in my home...

but I don't. No intaglio press. No letter press. Heck, I don't even have an old washing machine mangle to 'make-do' as a press, which was an authors' recommendation. This book is fine (as far as it goes) into prints you really can make at home i.e. by hand rubbing, but almost all of the chapters include projects that require a press. I was hoping for some innovative ways to do, say, etchings AT HOME and not have to drag my stuff to an art school and pay for press time. If you're so far along as to have invested in a real press in your own home studio, you already know everything that's in this book. If you want a book that's half what it purports to be, you might get a few ideas. Nothing is a total waste -- you might glean something from it that will improve your technique or broaden your experimentation, but don't count on it for prints you can really make AT HOME besides the usual monoprints and reliefs.
