I just received the 1st of two books I ordered from Amazon today written by Kim Arcand and Megan Watzke! "Light The Visible Spectrum and Beyond" and all I can say is WOW! This hardcover book is Spectacular in Every Detail from the Unbelieveable Images to the Accompanying Narratives that describe each Aspect of Light in Fine Detail! I thought I knew something about light since I've been a photographer all of my life and have a high-level of interest in Astronomy and the Sciences, but I've never seen another book like it! I have to consider this book the entire "Encyclopedia of Light!" It's a MUST HAVE for all Astronomers, Astrophotographers, Cosmologists, Physicists, or anyone else interested in learning about the many Fascinating Properties of Light! Purchase this well-written book for yourself or as a gift for your child, a family member or friend! You will not be disappointed! Kim Arcand works for NASA as a Visualization lead for the Chandra X-Ray Telescope and Megan Watzke works at the Smithsonian in Washington DC. Both of these women have excellent credentials and they have done an Outstanding Job in writing this book! Stunning visuals, fascinating content.

The images in this book are absolutely stunning! What an absolutely top quality book. It's beautiful as a physical object and packed with fascinating information. I also love that the authors are women, as women in STEM are so important. My husband and I are excited to read LIGHT with our son, and I would recommend this book for all families who enjoy reading books together that are informative and fun.

This is our second book from Arcand and Watzke and we absolutely love it. The pictures are stunning and match with the text to help you really understand different aspects of light. My seven year old daughter has a particular interest in astronomy and constellations, so anything related to the "stars" she loves, and she really liked the parts where you can see how different types of light can reveal different looking images. This book helps you understand what is going on from a science perspective, particularly if you're not a scientist, and now I can actually explain a thing or two. Really an awesome book for all ages.

About the Author

David H. Zald, Ph.D. is an assistant professor of psychology and a member of the Integrative Neuroscience program at Vanderbilt University. He received his doctorate in clinical psychology at the University of Minnesota and completed neuropsychological training at the Ann Arbor Veterans Affairs Medical Center/University of Michigan Hospital Program in Neuropsychology. He completed a post-doctoral fellowship in functional neuroimaging at the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Medical Center and University of Minnesota before joining the faculty at Vanderbilt. Dr. Zald's research focuses on the neuropsychology of emotions, with a particular emphasis on the functions of the amygdala and orbitofrontal cortex.
Scott L Rauch received his undergraduate degree with honors in Neuroscience from Amherst College
and attended medical school at the University of Cincinnati. He completed his residency training in Psychiatry as well as a Radiology Research Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). Currently, Dr. Rauch is Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and Associate Chief of Psychiatry for Neuroscience Research at MGH, where he also serves as Director of the Psychiatric Neuroimaging Research Program and the MGH Division of Psychiatric Neuroscience Research and Neurotherapeutics. Clinically, he provides consultation in cases of treatment-resistant obsessive compulsive disorders. Dr. Rauch has contributed over 250 publications to the scientific literature and serves on the editorial boards of six journals. His principal scientific interests relate to neuroimaging and the neurobiology of anxiety disorders.

Decline in writers word choice

The story is still very interesting but I feel like the author's writing is becoming less and less sophisticated. You can't seem to go more than 3 sentences without finding a curse word which doesn't really bother me but I had initially told my students this was a good series to read. Now however I am not so sure.

Fate of Ten, excellent read!

But then I love the entire series. I love the way it's put together and the characters. My favorite quote in the entire series is in this book: "Because of course he does". You'll get it when you read it. It's stuff like that mixed in with the stories that makes this a great series. Darn, already finished with Fate of Ten. Now I have to wait another year to see how it ends. Wonder what will be told in the lost files books between now and then? Legacies Reborn??? Sounds interesting! You'll enjoy this book but it ends leaving you hanging. That's all I'll say.

Review of "Methods in theoretical quantum optics"

I find this book really excellent. It gives a masterly
written introduction to all the most fundamental mathematical
methods in quantum optics. The concepts are introduced very
carefully, all the passages are explained in full detail, and
the discussion is very thorough throghout the book.
The authors gradually and clearly introduce the main
mathematical objects always relating them to basic
interactions and physical situations.
Special care is dedicated to the discussion of the basic
quantum states, number, thermal, coherent and squeezed.
Atomic coherent states and multimode extensions are discussed
as well. In each instance, simple Hamiltonian models
giving rise to the fundamental quantum states are
introduced and analysed in detail; among others,
I find excellent the detailed analysis devoted to the Jaynes--Cummings model, the beam splitter,
and the squeezing Hamiltonian.
Quite a substantial part of the book is dedicated
to the discussion of the statistical properties of the
electromagnetic field, in particular the
characteristic functions
and their associated quasiprobability distributions.
I believe that this book will be very useful both as
an introductory textbook for graduate and advanced
undergraduate students, as well as a reference book
for professionals working in the field of quantum optics
and basic quantum mechanics.

Loses its intended clarity by getting you lost in lawyerly verbosity

This book is inexcusably horrible, without any consolation for brevity or the like. It is quite seriously the worst textbook I've been required to use in law school. Its like the author didn't really understand the goals of accounting beyond the operational forms discussed. On a very practical level, there is often no sign of continuity among the chapters, or a contextual basis for the methods used within its pages. The author, frankly, often "loses the forest for the trees." Though they explain the goals of the tasks to be performed at the outset of each chapter, they then lose all sight of clarity by including needless terms and illustrations filled with vacuous truisms when performing the actual accounting functions. Additionally, the author often refers back to examples far back in the book without giving you a specific page number to go searching for - not only is it infuriating (as the author could have simply copied the information referred to), but the last thing a student of accounting needs to be doing is going on a scavenger hunt while trying to remain clear on the intended task.

Obviously, the result is that this highly intelligent author overly complicates the subject and make it far too difficult for a group (law students) that is generally a bit wary of anything involving numbers. This cannot be the case for a "For Lawyers" book, whose implicit goal is to obviate confusion. These authors, by lobbing words at a task in the hope that maybe we students will somehow grasp the concepts by combing through their verbosity, are defeating their own purpose.

Before assigning this book, I quite seriously recommend professors take a look at "Accounting for Dummies, 4th Edition" -- though it obviously does not hold the "For Lawyers" distinction, which seems to harbor some anodyne hope of giving the textbook some dubious worth, it at least provides the pedagogical material the textbooks tries to without the unnecessary opaqueness. I bought this "Dummies" book halfway through my course and understand so much more of the course material than I do when mining the textbook for information. This should not be the case - its entirely unfair to use a difficult textbook when so many more straightforward materials are out there.

Overly complicating this course with a book as priggish and out of touch as Prof. Cunningham's is really quite unfair to us students, as it takes a brave soul to take an accounting course in law school.

Indispensible in the metabolic clinic

A rapid "at a glance" reference manual devoted to inherited metabolic diseases, I consult this book several times a week as part of my clinical work. The book is arranged by metabolic pathway and with descriptions of metabolic diseases and their respective laboratory findings. The pathways themselves are defined but not in so much detail to overwhelm the general pediatric or neurology resident rotating through metabolic disease.

This book is small and easily fits in your pockets - for this reason I'm not sure why the book has a $73 price tag attached to it.

About the Author
Born in Hickory, North Carolina, Johnny Rector started playing guitar at the age of 13. He has been a freelance guitarist/teacher in the Chicagoland area for over 25 years. Johnny studied guitar under Joseph DePiano of Chicago, dance band arranging under Bill Russo, and the Joseph Schillinger method with Daniel Garamoni. He is the author of several guitar books which have gained prominence throughout the country.

Wonderful resource

I own & originally studied from an older version of this book in two volumes published in the 50's by Play-Rite Publications. I have been a guitar teacher for many years & always wished the books would be made available again so I could use them in instruction for current students. This is a revised version of those two books in a single volume, updated with some newer info & a cd. All guitarists will benefit greatly from this study & will enjoy playing the progressions. The knowledge contained in this book will stay with you & open up many new ideas for chord substitutions making your playing exciting & interesting. Johnny Rector presents the material in an interesting & logical order. "Mel Bay's Deluxe Encyclopedia of Guitar Chord Progressions" by Johnny Rector, along with "Mel Bay's Rhythm Guitar Chord System" are two books every jazz &/or rock guitarist should own. 5 stars!

Mel Bay's Encyclopedia of Guitar chords

I have read almost every review on this book.I was convinced to buy it and I did.I have been playing for 40yrs.with no formal training.I don't read notation.I so called play by ear and read cord formations on the top of music charts.I can hold my own with what I know.This book might be very good for someone who can develop with the way it is presented I cannot.I for one think it is boring and so is the CD instructor who does nothing more that announce the lesson and play the progressions with a mono tone voice.I really think this book should be used with a good teacher in conjunction with tunes that you could implement the chords too.Just to sit and play these progressions with no conception of what to do with them is pointless.After two weeks of this book I am looking elsewhere to help my needs.It is not a waste of money since you could use it as a reference.I played some of the progressions further into the book and I could hear melody lines of tunes in the voicing but that was all I gleaned.Good luck with your choice.
