Good Continued Reference for ICU/Anesthesia Nurse

First of all, I'm a bit of a nerd. I've worked in high acuity ICUs and also in prep for anesthesia school. Often times immunology isn't a well-covered subject, but this book does a great job filling the gap.
The information is scientific and clinical enough to be relevant to a person practicing in a hospital, but it's not so crazy as a true medical text might be (where things are broken down to chemical composition and reactions). I did find myself reading about situations I tend to run across (anaphylaxis, for example) wishing they were a tad more in-depth. That's OK though - this book gives a good starting point and/or refresher of the big picture.

One of the key strengths of the book is how it's organized by body region or type of immunity issue. This makes a clear cut boundary when looking for specific issues
For someone practicing in a surgical ICU, the section on transplants is a bit weak. That's the only area I found disappointing in the whole book... perhaps because I'm already knowledgeable in that regard. I would've liked to see that expanded though.

Overall, this is a solid text for someone who needs some extra help understanding immunology with a clinical focus. It's not going to be your reference/bible, but it will certainly provide a good understanding. I guess that goes with the territory of a book entitled "Essentials of..."

A nice primer on Immunology, at a fairly high level.

Maybe "primer" isn't the right word. This book is appropriate for those in medical school, or practicing as physicians. It's also nice for someone like me: pursuing a PhD in Biology, and interested in filling in the gaps in my knowledge regarding physiology and associated subjects. It's full of technical terms though, so if you haven't had some basic foundational courses or reading recently, it might be a bit overwhelming. That said, the illustrations are good, the text is readable (if presented at a somewhat advanced level), and the book is up to date on the diagnosis and treatment of immunological dysfunction. For being published by Wiley, the book isn't nearly as horribly expensive as some of their other texts.

That said, if cost is still an issue, the 5th edition (2006) is often available a bit more inexpensively and is quite similar: Essentials of Clinical Immunology

Thieme also has a similar text, their Color Atlas of Immunology (Thieme Flexibook), that is also nice, if a bit smaller and perhaps more dated. It's quite reasonably priced used though, if you just want a book for the fundamentals.

Anyway, while this is not a full-on textbook like Clinical Immunology: Principles and Practice, it is an excellent, up-to-date book, and likely contains enough information on immunology for most medical practitioners.

Great resource, just enough detail

I have found this book to be a great resource for reviewing immunology, as well as learning more about some of the diseases my patients have. The book starts with a basic refresher of the "actors" in immunology (recognition molecules, effector molecules, neutrophils, macrophages, T and B cells, etc.). Then it moves on to infection, immunodeficiency, anaphylaxis and allergy, and autoimmunity, all with brief case studies and great, clear illustrations. There are chapters on lymphoproliferative disorders, kidney diseases, skin diseases, joints and muscles, and lots more -- even a chapter on immunological diseases in pregnancy.

I find the writing very clear, with just enough detail to explain difficult concepts without becoming mired in excruciating detail. I really liked the chapter on autoimmunity, as I see so many patients with autoimmune diseases. The chapter asks, what prevents autoimmunity? And then goes on to ask (and answer), how does tolerance break down? What triggers autoimmunity, and how does tissue get damaged by autoimmune processes. It ends with treatment of autoimmune disease.

One note for American audiences is that the authors are from British hospitals, so some variation from American treatments/approaches can be expected, but I found this to be a very minor issue.

About the Author
is currently Director and Professor of Women Studies at University of California-Irvine. She received her Ph.D. in English from the University of California at Berkeley. A founder of Narika, an agency that addresses the needs of South Asian women in the U.S., she works with activist groups that focus on Asian women and immigration issues. She has authored a monograph and co-edited several books and journal issues, often with her long time collaborator Caren Kaplan. Her special interests include the history of British imperialism, non-western women travelers, consumer culture and globalization, South Asian women in diaspora, and the new transnational feminist activism

Caren Kaplan is currently Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Women's Studies at the University of California at Davis. After receiving her Ph.D. in the History of Consciousness Program at the University of California at Santa Cruz, she served on the faculty in the Department of English at Georgetown University from 1986 to 1992. The author of a monograph as well as the co-editor of several books, she has collaborated with Inderpal Grewal for many years on essays and edited collections. Her special interests are the history of Western and international feminism, feminist theory, and aspects of imperialism and globalization such as travel, tourism, and information technologies.

decent intro to women's studies

The only problem with this text is that the full length articles are not reprinted here. What can i say Except this book was Amazing! I decided to take a Women's Studies Class at The University of Houston,and my professor had assigned this book. By the end of the semester we had finished the entire thing. All the topics exposed in it are eyeopening, and intriguing. I highly recommend this one especially if you're into any controversial topics and want to read up on some of them. Its a great read especially because its divided into specific topics. Although it is geared towards a "classroom read" Its just a great discussion book.

About the Author
Daniel Odier was born in Geneva in 1945. He is best-known as the author of a Lolita-esque series of novels published in France under the pseudonym Delacorta. His book of sexual mysticism, Tantric Quest, was an international bestseller. For several years he taught screenwriting at the University of Oklahoma at Tulsa. The author lives in France.

Delight upon delight

I was delighted to learn of Odier's The Doors of Joy, since his earlier book, Tantric Quest, remains one of my favorites; in the top five of all the books I own. Doors of Joy is pithy wisdom obviously distilled from years of spiritual practice and a honed writer's ability to do away with the non-essential, leaving the reader with the gift of bite size morsels that refresh, nurture and delight the imagination. What a gift these meditations are! I feel joyous each time I read this book, and not much more needs to be read at a sitting than a page of two to infect me with a renewed trust in spontaneity and allowance of my playful, creative, authentic nature. Warning: this book will certainly encourage you to take risks with yourself that you probably haven't trusted in a long, long time. Len Worley, PhD, Austin, TX

Exceptionally clear, elegant in arrangement and ambition, very little generic spiritual phrase-making. An excellent introduction to the tradition of constructive meditations in the best Ch'an de-mystified style.

Very precious instrument for HSK for student of this level. Confucio's Institute Test is really those on this textbook. Could be filled with more testes

awesome book, but

I love this series as it's immensely helped me with my hsk studies. I'm only giving it 2 stars because it was supposed to come new, but instead came ripped and damaged. it doesn't seem like the packaging's fault because all the other items were fine.

Good practice book

This is a really good practice book for the HSK 4. A little harder than the actual test, but still very useful. Be aware, at this level, there are no more English explanations for problems.
