David K. Barton is a consultant on radar systems, recently retired from ANRO Engineering, Inc., of Hudson, Massachusetts. Since 1975, he has been the series editor of Artech House's highly successful Radar series. Holder of the IEEE's Centennial Medal, Millennium Medal, and Dennis J. Picard Medal, he is widely regarded throughout the world as a leading authority on radar technology. The Secret of Letting Go

Guy Finley filled his book, The Secret of Letting Go, with examples and stories that illustrate his concepts of how to let go of all the emotional baggage that drags down our spirits and often makes life a painful journey.
Finley says that we "don't need strength to let go of something. What you really need is understanding; and that's how this book will help you accomplish your lifelong dreams of being truly strong and independent." He explains that our inner selves are like hot air balloons, always trying to soar, and we hold them down by not letting go of the "angry attitudes, wasteful wishes, [and] harmful habits" that offer false promises of strength.
The book includes nine chapters, with titles like "How to Defeat What's Defeating You" and "Dare to Let Go and Live As You Please." Finley starts most chapters with a story, then uses the story to help explain his general philosophy. Further explanations are offered in the form of specific questions and answers, some of which are drawn from workshops he has conducted. Each chapter contains a list "special insights" to help readers apply what they have learned to their own lives.
Readers are also given questions that will help them understand the messages their inner selves have for them.
In his forward to the book, Desi Arnaz, Jr. writes that "Guy Finley takes the Wisdom of the Ages and uses it to gently coach his readers to heal the places in their own minds where psychological problems originate." He adds that "It equips a human being with an entirely different set of qualities that transforms stress to serenity, anxiety to assurance, and doubt to decisiveness."
Finley emphasizes throughout the book that we are not what we think we are, that we are in reality someone far greater than we have so far imagined. The answers to what keeps us holding on to self-defeating attitudes lie within us. The Secret of Letting Go is for everyone interested in understanding how they can free themselves from all that keeps their lives tethered in unhappiness and defeat.

A new relationship with yourself

There are a number of books and courses around that deal with `letting go' in the sense of emotional releasing. This book isn't one of them. It is a unique and full-blooded assault on your habitual thought patterns and preconceptions of yourself and the world. I would say it is unique because, although Guy Finley acknowledges the wise words of others, there is never a sense that the presentation piggybacks on the work of others in any way. Instead, the book argues its own case in a series of truth tales, analogies, dialogues, bulleted insights, explanations and devilishly teasing questions like: if I am thinking what I want to think, why is it hurting me to think it?
I confess it took me quite a long time to work through this book. It is so thought provoking that I could only take it in short pieces in order to absorb it. But it was well worth the effort. When I open it at random now, there isn't a single page that doesn't offer a profound truth that is worth reading and absorbing all over again. In fact that's exactly what the author suggests: to pick out ideas and work with them. I do, and perhaps the biggest recommendation is that, every time I do, I am tempted to start reading the book all over again.
To summarise, this book is not just a `how to' manual for letting go, it is about deeply understanding the need for such a process. Read it and be provoked into a new relationship with yourself!

Gentle Introduction to Timeless Principles...

"The Secret of Letting Go" is a gentle introduction to mysticism, nonduality or "The Perennial Philosophy." Finley is an expert at avoiding confusing terminology and new-age pap and gently introducing timeless and true spiritual principles to the beginner. Yet it is not without value to those who have had some experience with the nondual perspective. Of all Finley's books, this is probably the best.

Stunning.

I was attracted to the title of the book initially--"snow country" just sounded lovely, and I was not disappointed. The descriptive prose was lush and silky smooth, even while taking on a crisp distant feeling. The descriptions of the snow and the harshness of the landscape took on an almost mythical feeling, which made the sharp unsteadiness of Komako's character even more pronounced--in a way, she reminded me of Daisy Buchanan from the Great Gatsby. There's a lot I don't fully understand about this novel, and a lot I need to reflect on--but the snow country was a beautiful, starkly poignant place to dwell for a while.

Men and women in snowbound Japan

Modern new wave Japanese writing from the 1940s. It is not a straight novel. It is more a dream world conjugating personal drama and the ominous winter scenery of the mountain country. It describes the miserable condition of the geisha as she ages in small towns where gentlemen periodically unaccompanied by their wives come to spend a few days or a month in the company of a lady of pleasure, Only out of this milieu could be born the militaristic attitude and disregard for life shown during the war. This is not a book for somebody who does not let him or herself be drawn into the story, into the winter snow and loneliness.. The train as the only access continuously signals the fear of loosing a temporary love.

Reading Kawabata is like puffing a blunt on a winter day...

It takes patience to appreciate this author. He has the rare ability that all writers aspire but hardly come close to, and even in translation the effect of his words shine through, his gift to set a mood and paint a scene with words, saying little but implying much so that what is left unsaid could be another full novel in itself. Others have spoken of the plot, which there is so little of, but this is the beauty of the sometimes exhaustive and penetrating insight of Eastern Literature which many westerners can't get mostly because the cultures are so different. Kawabata's novel is as sparse and bleak as the landscape it is set in, but the manner in which he gives it to us is rich and beyond masterful. I will be rereading this novel for many years to come.

About the Author
Jonathan Berk is the A.P. Giannini Professor of Finance at the Graduate School of Business, Stanford University and is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Before coming to Stanford, he was the Sylvan Coleman Professor of Finance at Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to earning his Ph.D., he worked as an Associate at Goldman Sachs (where his education in finance really began).

Professor Berk’s research interests in finance include corporate valuation, capital structure, mutual funds, asset pricing, experimental economics, and labor economics. His work has won a number of research awards including the TIAA-CREF Paul A. Samuelson Award, the Smith Breeden Prize, Best Paper of the Year in The Review of Financial Studies, and the FAME Research Prize. His paper, “A Critique of Size-Related Anomalies,” was selected as one of the two best papers ever published in The Review of Financial Studies. In recognition of his influence on the practice of finance he has received the Bernstein-Fabozzi/Jacobs Levy Award, the Graham and Dodd Award of Excellence, and the Roger F. Murray Prize. He served as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Finance for eight years, is currently an Academic Director of the Financial Management Association, and is a member of the advisory board of the Journal of Portfolio Management.

Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Professor Berk is married, with two daughters, and is an avid skier and biker.

Peter DeMarzo is the Mizuho Financial Group Professor of Finance and Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He is also a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He currently teaches MBA and Ph.D. courses in Corporate Finance and Financial Modeling. In addition to his experience at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, Professor DeMarzo has taught at the Haas School of Business and the Kellogg Graduate School of Management, and he was a National Fellow at the Hoover Institution.

Professor DeMarzo received the Sloan Teaching Excellence Award at Stanford in 2004 and 2006, and the Earl F. Cheit Outstanding Teaching Award at U.C. Berkeley in 1998. Professor DeMarzo has served as an Associate Editor for The Review of Financial Studies, Financial Management, and the B.E. Journals in Economic Analysis and Policy, as well as a Director of the American Finance Association. He has served as Vice President and is currently President-elect of the Western Finance Association. Professor DeMarzo’s research is in the area of corporate finance, asset securitization, and contracting, as well as market structure and regulation. His recent work has examined issues of the optimal design of contracts and securities, the regulation of insider trading and broker-dealers, and the influence of information asymmetries on corporate investment. He has received numerous awards including the Western Finance Association Corporate Finance Award and the Barclays Global Investors/Michael Brennan best-paper award from The Review of Financial Studies.

Professor DeMarzo was born in Whitestone, New York, and is married with three boys. He and his family enjoy hiking, biking, and skiing.

Excellent textbook used by Stanford and Harvard business schools for their core finance class

An extremely well-written, up-to-date textbook. The authors explain the material step by step, clearly and logically. The presentation is attractive, with excellent use of color, diagrams, and boxes that explain concepts and common mistakes to avoid. The authors have also gone out of their way to keep the text up-to-date and relevant, and inserted many examples of how the material is used in the real world. The authors also conduct interviews with notable financial practitioners to understand how they apply financial thinking in major applications. Special attention is given to addressing the recent global financial crisis and the ongoing sovereign debt crisis. This is an outstanding textbook written by professors at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. It is used for the core finance classes at Stanford GSB and Harvard Business School, and deserves to be the standard text for the subject.
