Definitely for Sci-fi fans looking for an unconventional read

I admit that I am a lazy reviewer and it takes a lot for me to get on and write something about an author or book. If I'm writing a review, then I've found something special. I read a lot of science fiction, from established icons to up and coming independents—there's a lot of good stuff out there, and a lot of not so good. Luke Smitherd writes good stuff. I came across his novel The Stone Man when it was highlighted on the BookHub website. His writing style, character development, and unique story lines made me go and read every one of his other books in the course of 2 weeks (think Hugh Howey good). Having the compilation is fantastic...I read the stories when it when it was published in four separate installments. Waiting for your next novel Luke Smitherd.

For Your Reading Pleasure - My Highest Recommendation

I read this when it was four separate books. I left five-star reviews for all of the books. I'm not going to re-write everything I wrote, but I will say this book is definitely worth your time and you are getting the deal of a lifetime by paying only $4.99 for it.
This book contains all the elements of an epic love story with science fiction and spirituality and so many other things--and it all blends together beautifully. It is suspenseful and heartbreaking. I highly recommend it. I wish there was a better way of saying that. Just read it. You will not be disappointed.
In the afterword to the book, the author was ruminating on what makes a person an actual "writer", not someone who scribbles random thoughts that no one ever reads or someone with lofty goals that never sits down at the keyboard (but plans to someday). He seemed to come to the conclusion that a true writer is someone who gets paid for writing, someone who can make a living from putting words to paper. I'm going to have to disagree. The person who wrote this book is a writer whether or not it ever makes a penny. He created people and places and worlds and made them believable and authentic. He wrote characters that are so real you feel their pain and want everything to turn out all right. I consider a good book to be one that stirs your emotions, whether those are fear, love, hate, suspense, and imagination. I just looked up the British definition for the word "fantasy": "a series of pleasing mental images, usually serving to fulfil a need not gratified in reality". I think that describes this book very well and it was written not by a writer, but by an outstanding writer.

Highly recommended read from an author thats as addictive as crack.

The first time I read this book it was in 4 parts, and I read each as they were released. The first book had me hooked. The setup and characters were intriguing, and the pace of the narrative was good, it pulled you in, and kept the story moving forward, but didn't rush and was comfortable in its own setting. The alienation and panic were excellently portrayed, and the outlandish scenario was made believable in a superbly crafted way. I empathised with our protagonist, but I didn't always like him. Despite his horrible situation, and the massive pressure he was under, sometimes he was still a bit of a dick. The second book, The woman in the night, really digs deeper into the character of Minnie, and the relationship that develops over the course of this chapter. By this time, to continue the fishing analogy at the start, I was on the rod and heading towards the keep net. As I approached the third novella, I began to worry. Would Mr Smitherd be able to pay off the resolution of these engaging, wonderful characters that we'd rooted for through many pages of my kindle, or would he muddle the ending like a certain Mr King (my favourite author) sometimes does with his otherwise excellent books? I'm glad to say that the former was true, books 3 and 4 really pack an emotional punch and leave the reader satisfied with the outcome. I would highly recommend this novel as a great read on the plane, the train or just dipping into again and again while you are out and about trying to look cool while sitting in a coffee shop sipping a gingerbread latte. By the end I had been landed in the fishermans' boat, wriggling until being knocked over the head and skinned, and would buy more of Luke Smitherds' work without a doubt. (I 've taken the fishing analogy too far on reflection.)
