About the Author

Douglas D. Scott is retired as supervisory archaeologist, Midwest Archeological Center, National Park Service. Widely known as an expert on military archaeology, he is the author or co-author of numerous publications, including They Died with Custer: Soldiers' Bones from the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Uncovering History: Archaeological Investigations at the Little Bighorn, and Custer, Cody, and Grand Duke Alexis: Historical Archaeology of the Royal Buffalo Hunt.

P. Willey is Professor of Anthropology at Chico State, and co-author with Douglas D. Scott of They Died with Custer: Soldiers’ Bones from the Battle of the Little Bighorn.

Melissa A. Connor, also an Archeologist with the Midwest Archeological Center, specializes in the reconstruction of diet through the use of isotopes and trace elements in bone. She holds B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

They died with Custer.

This was a superbly written volume outlining the archaeological reclaimation of the battlefield site of the Little Big Horn. A military archeologist (Scott), a forensic archeologist (Conner), and a forensics anthropologist (Willey) combined talents to preserve and identify the material evidence of the events that took place there after a wildfire stripped the scene of vegitation and exposed the site to erosive processes and human curiosity. The book details: 1) the history of the 7th Cavalry, including among other things, the age of the soldiers, their origin, and length of service, 2) the efforts to identify individual soldiers and the location of their fall in battle, 3) the effect of the rigorous life on the frontier on the health of the soldiers, 4) etc. I found particularly interesting the efforts to reconstruct the facial features of some of the skulls in an effort to identify the remains with specific people. This is a good text of archaeology at work.

A Very Thorough and Precise Study

Among all of the books I have on the archeaology of the Little Bighorn, my library would not be complete with out this one concerning the findings from those digs.

It is well written. It is very technical and not the kind of book a causual reader would enjoy. It is , however, the kind of book a very serious student of the subject will enjoy. Although I was not present for any of the digs as a volunteer, I have kept up with them by purchasing many other books related. I have visted the battlefield several times of the years and even met a few of the poeple mentioned in the book. This all of course, makes it of special interest to me. I would highly reccomend this book to anyone with a very serious interest in the anthropology concerning the members of the 7th U.S. Cavalry who participated in the battle in 1876. There are some very important comparisons with other remains that were studied from several other areas of the Western expansion to arrive at a picture of what these men were really like. As the book concludes, this was not a period that was quite so romantic as many people have imagined. It was a very tough life in a harsh environment. For the advanced "Custer Buff" or historian, this is a must have book.

A little dry at times but still very good

I enjoy all books pertaining to the classic story of Custer's last stand and love learning new details about the event. The author presents a lot of new details (At least for me anyways) and statistics that help bring several of these troopers back to life. One thing I did not know was how hastily the bodies were buried (If you could call it that) and over several years. How times have changed. As an enlisted person I cringed at some of the descriptions on how almost all of the officer bodies were identified and recovered for burial elsewhere while the poor enlisted man had some dirt heaped over him. Such is life. :-)

I gave 4 stars because sometimes it seemed like the some of stats were repeated but still a very good book.

Soyinka's treatment of the relationship between individual selfhood and the various framing social and collective identities, so the book argues, is yet another aspect linking his work to the broader intellectual currents of today. Thus, Soyinka's vision is seen as central to contemporary efforts to grasp the nature of modernity. His works conceptualize identity in ways that promote and modify national perceptions of 'Africanness', rescuing them from the colonial and neocolonial logic of cultural denigration in a manner that fully acknowledges the cosmopolitan and global contexts of African postcolonial formation. Overall, what emerges from the present study is the conviction that, in Soyinka's work, it is the capacity to assume personal and collective agency and the particular choices made by particular subjects at given historical moments that determine the trajectory of change and ultimately the nature of postcolonial existence itself. Mpalive-Hangson Msiska is a Senior Lecturer in English and Humanities at Birkbeck College, University of London, with research interests in postcolonial literatures and in critical and cultural theory. He has previously taught at the Universities of Malawi, Stirling and Bath Spa. He has co-authored or co-edited "The Quiet Chameleon: A Study of Poetry from Central Africa" (1992), "Wole Soyinka" (Writers and their Works series, 1998), "Writing and Africa" (1997), and "Chinua Achebe s Things Fall Apart " (2007)."

MICHAEL CROSBY, O.F.M. CAP., lives in community with other friars in a downtown Milwaukee parish that serves the urban poor, homeless and marginalized. His ministry attempts to develop a spirituality of discipleship for U.S. and other “First World” Catholics, primarily through corporate reform and church reform. Well-balanced, well-written

The book is adapted from the research Crosby did for the Vatican when it investigated Casey for sainthood. (He's now "venerable.") As such, it's thoroughly researched and footnoted, with none of the hagiographic sense of many saint-biographies. The style is balanced, almost academic but with none of the dryness. In fact, Casey's humanity comes across foremost, along with compassion for him and those to whom he ministered. The text is very readable. Although there are hundreds of footnotes, most of them are citations and not clarifications (meaning you don't have to keep flipping to the back of the book for the full story.)

Crosby does not hesitate to discuss some of Casey's shortcomings, giving a well-rounded treatment to the man as a human being who lived within his culture and his time.

The best part, for me, was how Crosby chronicled some of the changes made in Casey's spirituality over time. Too often we read about saints as if they were fully-formed by age twelve (unless they had a cataclysmic conversion experience) but Crosby notes at times that a certain trait was just in its beginning stages, or that such-and-such was the first notes of what would become one of the hallmarks of Casey's later ministry. This documentation of his spiritual progress should be a comfort for all of us saints-in-training who know we have a long way to travel.

This is a great book.

This book is about a way of life of gratitude, and about being open to God's will. It is an easy read, and you can't put it down. I am buying a copy for a friend who just took the bar exam.

Very cool scenarios

This book has some of the coolest scenarios in the entire game. The scenarios technically do not happen during the same time period as the books or movies, but some are mentioned in history of the books. So the scenarios are "What-ifs" and speculation. Some people may hate non-canon or semi-stretching the canon type material. The scenarios are awesome though. The Dragon Gathamaur (is he in JRR's writing?) is said to have hated Durin, and attacked his tower, that scenario is in this book. They make a scenario of when Durin's folk uncover the Balor in the mines. That's cool, a ton of dwarves vs the Balor. There are two scenarios involving goblins attacking dwarven gates. Lastly they include an outdoor scenario of the dragon Gaurakh attacking the town of High Water.

Total waste of my money

This is not a book to help you learn kinesiology. It is the history of how it came about. If you're in a kinesiology class and are actually learning movements, contractions, joints, muscles, etc. this book will NOT help you! Total waste of my money.

I didn't care for the characters. They weren't interesting. There were a lot of sex scenes, but they lacked emotional draw.

I wasn't thrilled. I wasn't drawn to the characters. The story was ok but could have used more depth. There were many sex scenes which were ok, but I wasn't drawn in emotionally. There was one event which didn't make sense to me. Dominic and Nadia like and enjoy each other, but he decides to return her to her home. This causes Nadia to feel rejected. He ends up taking her back, but I found it unnecessary. It was an illogical source of conflict. The Jelena story was a little more interesting, but again I wasn't drawn into the characters enough to enjoy it.

A minor problem: the cover picture is wrong. Dominic has a disfigured face. Cover guy does not.

STORY BRIEF:
Dominic is disfigured with scars on his face and body. Alexis had something to do with causing them when he broke up with her a few years back. She wants him dead and has a contract out on his life. He lives in a remote fortress-like home. Mikhail steals Dominic's car and sells it. Dominic comes to Mikhail's home threatening violence. Mikhail's daughter Nadia offers herself to Dominic saying she will live with him and do anything he says. He is intrigued and takes her home. He requires that she always be naked. They have a lot of sex which includes bondage, spanking and sex toys.

A second story is about Nadia's sister Jelena. She married a wealthy older man Henry. He pays a monthly allowance to Jelena and also to her father. Jelena asks for more money to help Nadia which Henry refuses. Jelena knows Henry will probably divorce her for someone younger and leave her with no money. She takes steps to get money and power. She uses sex to make this happen. There are several Jelena sex scenes in the book which include 2 women, 2 men with 1 woman, and rear door activity.

"Beauty and the Beast" Modernly Retold

Forgetting the fact that "Beauty and the Beast" told in the many different ways (culturally) has always been one of my favorite fairy tales, this book by Cathy Yardley is really good. Told with and in an excellent voice, composition, and new detailing, "Enslave" gives an erotically modern retelling of the story most of us have known since childhood. It isn't a story that is told with heavy emotions or incredible depth, but it does have a view that is by far spicy, sweet, charming, and interestingly nice in all the right ways.

Centered around three main characters this story begins similar to the old "Beauty and the Beast" in where the first main character, a Russian beauty, named Nadia Bessonova's father has stolen "the Rose" from the Beast. That "beast" being Dominic Luder who is an ex-criminal, killer, and mobster. It is because of that Dominic has come to brutally collect from the patriarch Bessonova, whose main course in life has been to steal, cheat, lie, and cast off his daughters through any means productive for him (such as marriage and sex). Bravely, Nadia makes the decision to go with Dominic so that she can buy her family sometime. While in captivity, she learns about satisfying lust and that Dominic is more than she expected. She learns that he is a trapped person who has created a prison as safety, and he learns through his regained lust and reopened vision how to trust and care for another again. However, as a new twist to the tale, the sister of Nadia, Jelena, comes to narrate the distressful and empowering attempt of helping her sister. With each narration you see every character grow and change (Nadia being the least to have to change) as their experiences happen to them.

In a nutshell, this book seriously won't let you down. However, that is all based upon the fact of your liking a "good" erotica and tale mixed together as one.

Great literature - barely OK physical condition of the book

The rating categories provided are absolutely inadequate for this book - one of the greatest screen plays written in the aftermath of WWII in German. Friedrich Torberg calls it "one of the strongest challenges that ever emanated from a German stage" (back cover). There is nothing to add. Frisch reflects on the "guilt by tolerating grievances" of all the citizens of the fictitious nation of Andorra. "Is there violence?" Was there violence in how Jews were treated during the Nazi regime in Germany and elsewhere? Not to broach the issue of the emotional and physical violence that Jews were subjected to would mean to distort historic facts. Frisch, of course, is not guilty of distortion. "Is there sexual content?" That would depend on the definition. The story is about a young man who grew up thinking he was a Jew who had been both rescued from prosecution in a foreign country and then adopted by the man he lives with. In reality, this man is his biological father who did not want to admit that he had a relationship with a woman of this hostile country. The young man falls in love with his half sister, of course not knowing she is his half sister. During one night he sits in front of his sister's closed bedroom door continuously talking to her with no answer, and the audience knows that a soldier is with her the whole night. I don't know whether this is "No sexual content," "Some sexual content," or "Explicit sexual content," and I frankly don'e care. Of course the last question "How is the story narrated?" is genuinely meaningless for a screen play.

As far as the physical condition of the book goes, it was a used book listed in "good" condition. Apparently this does not exclude underlines and scribbles on almost every single page. Of course, I won't send an eight Dollars paperback with five Dollars S&H back over that... That's why there is not five stars for what has become a German literature classic.
