About the Author
Brian is a Master Sommelier, Fellow of the Hospitality Institute, Licentiate and Honorary Member of City & Guilds of London Institutes, and an Honorary Member of the Academy of Food Wine Service. In 1972 he passed the prestigious Master Sommelier Diploma and was a founder member of the Court of Master Sommeliers World-wide, established in 1977. He has been Chief examiner since 1990 and Chief executive since 1998. Sometime Chief examiner for the C&GLI and the HCIMA Food and Beverage programs, he was a UK Government Inspector for Colleges and Universities until his retirement as Head of the Hospitality Management Degree programs, University of Plymouth, UK. He was Cellar Master for The Lord Clifford of Chudleigh for a number of years. In 2005 he was awarded the 3rd Annual 'Ho'okele' Award for Lifetime Achievement at the Kapalua Wine and Food Festival Maui Hawaii. He has had extensive experience in the Hospitality Industry in both practical and consultative capacities. He has visited nearly all the major wine areas of the world where he has obtained the majority of his wine knowledge first-hand from winemakers. Brian is an international wine judge and has judged at a number of International Sommelier and Food Service competitions.

I was first introduced to Mr. Julyan's exciting syllabus through the Court of Master Sommelier's examination process. As both a student of wine and an educator in the hospitality sect, I have found his brief yet thorough writing to be an indispensable reference guide when educating my colleagues at both of my establishments.

For the home enthusiast or even someone just curious about broadening their horizons into a larger world of viticulture and enology, Mr. Julyan's writing broaches the sometimes forboding subject of the old world in an extremely approachable manner, the new world with a sense of excitement and the realms of bartending with both sensetivity toward tradition and the modern mixologist.

For the wine-savvy diner, this book provides valuable insight into the realm of "what should be going on" in the parts of the restaurant world you don't get to see. As a 20 year restaurant veteran, I also greatly appreciated Mr. Julyan's explainations of the difference between the should be's of service versus the nescessary practicality of providing service within the specific constraints of each establishment's environment and ability.

Both an exceptional value and a more approachable read than the sometimes overtly technical wine tomes available, I strongly recommend this to anyone looking to increase the caliber of thier sales and service training in their hospitality career or to soak in a little more than just grape-juice!

Master Sommelier and Hospitality Professor Brian Julyan's long-awaited revision of SALES AND SERVICE FOR THE WINE PROFESSIONAL is finally available. Wine is covered in a succint, no-nonsense, easy-to-grasp, and immediately-useable manner. The same holds true for sections on beers, spirits, mineral waters, specialty coffees, traditional European cigar, cigarette, and cocktail service, and even telephone manner. Mr. Julyan's British background does become obvious with the section on how to greet royalty. While certainly amusing, this may not come in as handy for Americans. However, the rest of this guide book is so helpful to everyday operations that copies are sure to become dog-eared, well-worn, and kept at arms' reach by servers and supervisors alike instead of gathering dust on an executive's shelf.
Educators and Sommeliers: this book is one-stop-shopping for all of those interested in the sales and service of wine, and is on the required reading list for the Master Sommelier program (now we can stop circulating that eight-year-old photocopied version from Hawaii!)

Excellent reference on the subject thoroughly expanded vs. some earlier edition

I am a big fan of Joseph Schmuller Statistical Analysis for Dummies books. Earlier I had reviewed his first edition that catered to Excel 2003. His new 4th edition covering Excel 2016 is just as good. It is also more expansive. The first edition had 392 pages. The current 4th edition comes in at 527 pages. The author has added two new chapters, including a very interesting one on non-parametric statistics. And, he treats many of the subjects in greater detail. He also shows some of the additional formulas and capabilities of Excel 2016 that were not included in Excel 2003. Below is the text of my original review of his first edition that is just as relevant today.

I bought this book because I am currently researching multiplicity or how to test multiple hypotheses. This is one of the trickiest and most interesting areas of statistics. I am an advanced Excel user and a reasonably proficient autodidact statistician. Additionally, I have stuck with Excel 2003 as that is the Excel format I have used for decades and saw no value in relearning Excel from nearly scratch to adapt to the newer versions.

In view of the above, I was delighted in finding this early version of this book (copyright 2005) that demonstrates all the hands on statistical examples in the Excel 2003 version (the version I use!).

As a result, I have learned a ton about multiplicity and how to deal with it. The Excel Add-in has terrible semantics regarding all the ANOVA techniques. For instance to do a Two-Way Between Group ANOVA, you have to use in Excel the ANOVA: Two-Factor with Replication (which actually describes a different method). And, Schmuller does an excellent job of guiding you through Excel's spurious ANOVA semantics.

The book covers a surprising amount of statistics. Once you complete reading, studying, and practicing the examples within this book, you will know a great deal about statistics. The latter should provide an adequate foundation for any upper level degree in social sciences.

Schmuller does an excellent job of outlining how much you can do in statistical analysis without earmarked very expensive software such as Matlab, SAS, SPSS or really cryptic ones such as R. In the end, you will be surprised with Excel's capabilities. Schmuller shows some pretty advanced quantitative methods including: the mentioned ANOVA techniques, probability, and statistical distributions sections. He even shows you how to conduct Monte Carlo simulation with regular Excel! That can save you a ton of money not having to buy another set of Monte Carlo simulation earmarked software such as Crystal Ball or @Risk which would set you back over $1,000.

Great Book. 5 Statistically-Significant Stars! (But Maybe Hard To Recommend If You Already Have The 3rd Edition)

I have the 3rd edition (Statistical Analysis with Excel For Dummies). The 3rd edition runs 480 pages, this new 4th edition runs 20 pages more (500 pages). Part 1 ("Getting Started...") runs from page 7 to 62 in the 3rd edition and 7 to 60 in this 4th edition. Part 2 ("Describing Data") runs from page 63 to 184 in the 3rd edition and 61 to 182 in the 4th edition. Part 3 ("Drawing Conclusions from Data") runs from page 185 to 352 in the 3rd edition and 375 in the 4th edition. Part 4 ("Probability") runs from page 353 to 412 in the 3rd edition and 377 to 436 in the 4th edition. And Part 3 ("The Part Of Tens") runs from page 413 to 450 in the 3rd edition and 437 to 470 in the 4th edition.

This means Part 1 is pretty much the same in both editions (56 versus 54 pages); Part 2 is 122 pages in both editions; Part 3 is 168 pages in the 3rd edition. but 194 in the 4th (meaning Part 3 is where the book has been most improved upon; there are two new chapters (read more, below)); Part 4 is 60 pages in both editions; and Part 5 is four pages shorter in the 4th edition (34 versus 38). The two appendices are the same in content and length. Both editions show two bonus appendices ("When Your Data Live Elsewhere" and "Tips For Teachers (And Learners)"), but they're not in the book (I'm guessing you have to go online).

There is a difference and perhaps a significant one (not counting the software interface differences between MS Excel 2016 versus MS Excel 2013 (which I don't think are all that significant)): the addition of two new chapters - Chapter 16 ("It's About Time") and Chapter 17 ("Non-Parametric Statistics"). Chapter 16 was interesting and I think a case can be made that its inclusion makes it worthwhile to upgrade (frankly, though, Chapter 17 is beyond my ken at this point so I can't say whether it makes an upgrade worthwhile). So here's where I come down on this new 4th edition: if you have the 3rd edition, are comfortable with Excel 2013, have comfortably made (or think you can make) the transition to Excel 2016, and can do without the two new chapters, then I'm not sure the book is worth the upgrade. But in any other case I highly recommend you not try to save a few bucks by buying the 3rd edition and purchase this book ($27.60 versus $21.60 (Amazon prices at the time of this review)).

Bottom line, the majority of stats most of us do do not require specialized programs such as Mini-Tab, SPSS, etc. They are no doubt fantastic tools, but they are pricey. So if you can get away with doing most of your stats work with Excel (a tool that most of us have even if we've never really used it much) that's a real bargain. Excel is also a great way to go because many of us learned stats on a TI-84 or Casio handheld and one of the things we learned was that working with a hand-held has severe limitations.

As such, this book (in any of its editions) is a fantastic resource (I say this as someone who counts himself severely math-challenged). Author Schmuller does an excellent job of walking the reader through the concept of the stat and how the stat is worked with/through in Excel. The author jokingly states he covers every stat function Excel offers but one ("Fourier Analysis") which to my mind means Excel can handle pretty much anything a non-specialist can throw at it (and some) and that the author helps you through each and every one (minus one). That, to me, is value for the money.

If my dream to tackle a doctorate-level degree comes to fruition, stats will once again present me with a tough challenge. I'm glad this book will be on my desk helping me along the way.

A Good Handbook for Exploring Statistics in Excel 2016, and Data Munging, A First Step Toward Machine Learning.

At close to 600 pages and written in an easy to follow manner and geared now to Excel 2016. While the reader should have at least an elementary knowledge of statistics, the examples are geared to the beginner with just basic knowledge of Excel and standard elementary statistics.

The biggest addition I can make to the other fine reviews is that this book and the use of Excel for Data Munging provides a good resource for those venturing out into the modern obsession of machine learning. Excel with the included tools provides a good resource for examining and manipulating a data source before venturing into more powerful Statistical and Machine Learning tools like R and Python.

Historical ROMANCE, not historical fiction

Fans of truly well-researched historical fiction in the Sharon Kay Penman mold will recognize that this is an important difference. This is a recycled boy-meets-girl plot (they're kept apart by a series of contrivances! but DESTINY, etc.!) with history loosely superimposed on it. The characters exist only to further the romance, so they're all one-dimensional (the villain, the busybody, the doting father), and keeping track of so many characters with so few distinguishing characteristics gets to be more trouble than it's worth by the time the completely predictable ending rolls around.

Enjoyable historical fiction of a fabled relationship

Fascinating story based in the history of India's Mughal Empire. The story is about Mehrunnisa, daughter of a poor Persian who comes to the empire to make his fortune. She meets the son of Emperor Akbar (third of the Mughal) prince Salim when eight, and falls in love with him on his wedding day, and decides that someday, she will become his wife. Through brief encounters, Salim becomes fascinated with her, much to the disapproval of his powerful third wife, Jagat Gosain. The novel then follows Mehrunnisa's marriage to another Persian —a decorated soldier in Akbar's army, the rebellions of Salim against Akbar (where her husband betrays Salim), the reconciliation between father and son, and Salim's rise to power as Emperor Jahangir. Like his father, Salim's eldest son rebels, with the help of Mehrunnisa's husband. We also see how Jagat Gosain works to prevent Mehrunnisa and Salim from being together. Ultimately, however, it is the story of how, throughout the years, she held a power over him that no other in his harem of 19 wives and hundreds of concubines held over him.

Sundaresan creates a wonderful, vivid picture of the world of late 16th to early 17th Century India. The vastness of the Mughal Empire, the climate and customs of the period, the variety of it's people, and the complexity of the politics of the time are woven together to create an engaging story. There was a nice balance between providing the details and terms while not reading like a textbook explaining every term and custom. All of the main characters were distinct, and fully realized — each with their own voice and behaviors, letting me sink into the story despite my unfamiliarity with the setting - historical and cultural.

I look forward to reading the two following books by Sundaresan - the next dealing with Mehrunnisa's rise to be the premier wife, and the power behind the thrown. I always enjoy reading about the unconventional women of history.

I am really torn about the three stars. When I was reading, I was thinking it was a four star novel. When I reached the end, I was convinced that I would only give it two. This novel was intriguing from the beginning and kept me interested throughout. The problem is that no one can write a complete story these days. Everything has to be a trilogy. So you read the story, waiting for when the protagonist marries the emperor. As soon as she does, it ENDS. Abruptly. Without warning, or even a gentle winding down. There is not even a cliffhanger or an enigma. It simply is... and then it isn't. I found this maddening and artless, from an author who had already demonstrated that she is capable of very good storytelling. I am so mad at having to buy another book to continue, as if it was a serial, and I feel so cheated by the publisher, that I may not read the next book at all.

Love this series

4.5 stars. Another good book in the series. This one picks up with Haig and Kern (Weres) and Audric the turned. Haig and Kern have been mates for over 400 years, but when Kern goes with Neo in the last book to try and save Michael from La Mont, the psycho vamp, he is mind controlled and mates with Audric, the vamp once werewolf. As you can imagine, it puts a wedge between Haig and Kern. As they work through that, the Realm where all beautiful creatures can safely roam starts to have problems and several secrets are found out through the past.. Great next book, on to the next.

This is one of those rare, truly inspiring books that is so good, you wish you had a ton of money and could mail a copy to everyone. The author brings history to life. It makes one proud to be a human being when one reads of the vision, raw courage and determination of the men and women who fought for the honor of the Jewish people and the rebirth of the Jewish nation. Through the experiences of Joseph Trumpeldor and Vladimir Jabotinsky, we see the suffering, ideological and physical struggle and ultimate success of those striving to build a Jewish homeland and a strong, self-reliant people. It's the kind of book you can't put down, and you will be thinking about Trumpeldor and his impact long after you finish the book.

About the Author
Bruce and Ju-Chan Fulton are the translators of numerous volumes of contemporary Korean fiction, including Trees on a Slope by Hwang Sun-wōn and The Dwarf by Cho Se-hui, both published by University of Hawai'i Press. Bruce Fulton is the inaugural holder of the Young-Bin Min Chair in Korean Literature and Literary Translation in the Department of Asian Studies, University of British Columbia.

Ju-Chan Fulton is, with Bruce Fulton, the cotranslator of The Dwarf by Cho Se-hui and Trees on a Slope by Hwang Sun-won.

compelling and creative story

This is a really excellent book, whether one thinks of it as a single novel or a connection of closely interconnected stories. The movement among different characters is subtle and imaginative, and the different perspectives are illuminating. One strength of the book is the interesting window it provides on Korean society in the midst of wrenching industrialization, but in my mind this is linked to the book's only real weakness as well: we don't really need the gross details of the degradation of the human and natural environment, or the soaring rhetoric of those defending the workers against the evil capitalists, rubbed in our faces quite so explicitly. Overall, though, I recommend this book highly. Related recommendations: The Old Garden, by Hwang Sok-yong, and Words of Farewell: Stories by Korean Women Writers, edited by Sok-Kyong Chi-Won & Chong-Hui.

It's really a great novel. In terms of style and structure

It's really a great novel.

In terms of style and structure, the things Cho Se-hui does are incredibly innovative (for the 80's) and compelling. This novel will hit you emotionally when you don't expect it. Some passages are dialogue heavy with terse prose, and some passages spend several pages giving detailed descriptions or explanations. A few pages are even written in the style of a script, as if for a play. Though the writing doesn't have one consistent form or voice throughout the novel, instead of distracting from Cho Se-hui's message, this usage of multiple voices creates a much more three-dimensional view of the story portrayed and enhances the story.

A must read for those studying Korean lit.for sure, but I would definitely recommend it to anyone else who likes good books.

"It is not our intention to turn Lewis's stories into sermons," say Bruner and Ware, authors of Finding God in the Lord of the Rings. "But we do hope to draw spiritual insights from the faith that inspired their author and informed their plots." The authors use selected scenes from the Narnia Chronicles to open each of the more than two dozen short, thematic chapters of this book. These chapters address spiritual themes that many Christians can relate to: why do bad things happen to good people? How does the Holy Spirit work in the lives of the faithful? What should people do with feelings of disappointment in God? Those who haven't yet read the entire series may be confused by the examples given here, which jump quickly among the Narnia books without always identifying which novel is serving as a chapter's opening illustration. And despite the authors' determination not to reduce Lewis's Chronicles to mere sermons, many of these chapters feel like superficial narrative preaching, with a story, a brief meditation and a final take-away thought for reflection. Still, some of the authors' observations are insightful, and the chapters are short enough that the book could even be used as a month-long collection of daily devotions.

About the Author
Kurt Bruner is a graduate of Talbot Seminary and author of books with combined sales of over 400,000 copies. Kurt is madly in love with his wife, Olivia, and their four children, with whom he lives in the shadows of the snow-capped Colorado Rocky Mountains.

Jim Ware graduated from UCLA in 1976 with a B.A. in Classics. After marrying Joni, he enrolled at Fuller Theological Seminary, emphasizing theology and Semitic languages (Hebrew, Aramaic, and Ugaritic) and eventually earning an M.A. in Biblical Studies. In 1991 Jim and family relocated with Focus on the Family from Southern California to Colorado Springs, where they currently make their home. He enjoys everything about life in the shadow of Pikes Peak.

Great devotional for lovers of Narnia

I love this book! I know those Narnia books better than I know my own, so I was skeptical that the book would tell me anything new. But I've gotten a LOT out of the parallels the authors outline. I never considered the spiritual meaning of Father Christmas breaking through the White Witch's winter. Or the Pevensies being "drawn into" Narnia by Queen Susan's horn in PRINCE CASPIAN. The authors don't simply cite Biblical parallels - they outline spiritual truths exemplified in some of my favorite passages, and they use many of Lewis' other writings to support their points. I highly recommend this for lovers of Narnia looking for a great devotional book.

An excellent anc concise evaluation.

Finding God in the Land of Narnia is by the same authors who gave us Finding God in Lord of the Rings. An interesting duo of books as C.S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkein were Christian frinds who had a great influence on each other. Though Kurt Bruner is credited in the Amazon listing, he is again ably assited by Jim Ware and I wish we knew more about these two very excellent authors. They reveal an understanding of the use of fantasy to teach the basic tenets of Christianity. Though the emphasis today is on the first book due to the film, this is an excellent handbook to the series. There are many other good ones, however this book is concise and excellent to give one who has just seen the excellent Disney film on the first Narnian book. There are quotes by Lewis from other books which should encourage readers to get into all the great books this master of theology produced.

Good but not great

I found this book very good but not as nearly as insightful as other books on the subject. The chapters just seemed to end out of nowhere. The authors should have decided if they were writing a devotional or just a book on Narnia because I felt like they were trying to do both and it just didn't come together.

That being said it is a good book. A nice touch is the simple fact that it touches on all of the Chronicles. You get at least a tidbit from each and every book in the series.

"And Who Shall Stand....?"

While an extraordinary reaction by a wartime pastor to man's inhumanity to man, with (spoiler here) an interesting twist to the reason for Christ's appearance in the world, I was a bit disappointed as I was hoping for re-assurance of purpose from an omnipotent God of intention. In all fairness however, within the limitations of a theatrical play, Rutenborn brilliantly manages to involve the audience in exploring their own violated sense of justice. In the final analysis, his pastoral attempt to help humanity explore the nature of God in The Sign of Jonah is both successful and satisfying. Consider as a" read".

Short but impactful.

Loved it and still love it. I have read it several times (only 75 pages) and still cannot get through the ending without choking up. When no one wants to take the blame for all the evil mankind is capable of, even ourselves, we end up shaking our fist at God and blaming Him. This play reveals in such an artful and beautiful way, that we have a God who, although is NOT to blame, willingly takes the blow we deserve. Can't say anymore.....a must read
