Great "How-to Manual" to Great Health

I listen to this in my car, I am almost finished and I really find the information easy to understand and follow along. Its a great introduction for those who are not "health aware". It also has some great statistics and detailed information for those who are not a novice in following a healthy life style. I plan on giving this CD to a few family members for X-mas.

Best Aggregate Source for Actionable Health Information

This is the first review I have written for any product on Amazon.com. I feel so strongly about this book it would be a disservice not to comment on it.

I have ordered numerous books on the topic of health and healthy living. None have presented a complete picture. Most books contained fragments, at best, of the completeness of information as presented in this book.

The cover of this book is completely accurate when it alludes to it contents: why our lifestyle and diet are the causes of our poor quality of health, and how we can solve this.

If you have any doubt as to the value of this book, I would encourage you to do a search on Google for the title/publisher of this book. On the website for this book you can find the complete contents of chapter one in PDF (Adobe Reader) format.

If you are in search of a book that dispenses with the politics and misinformation on the topic of health, I highly recommend this text to you. As of this writing, the book is selling for about $16. What a small price to pay for the wealth of knowledge contained between its covers!

Thorough Analysis of an Increasing Shift in Global Habitats

This book is an excellent resource for anyone interested in the topic of urban ecosystems. While the authors are English, they do an unbiased job of including case studies from all over the world and describe a thorough span of different urban ecosystems and their inhabitants. My favorite part of this text was the inclusion of social implications (how social structures like socioeconomic status have impacted how species are redistributed or allowed to thrive in certain urban environments). I originally bought this book for a college course, but it has a place in my permanent collection for sure!

A great overview of relevant topics and vocabulary. Some chapters (such as chapter 4) are a little weak but I think it is due to uncertainty in where one topic ends and another begins - much of what I thought would be in chapter 4 was in chapter 5 so the detail was eventually covered.

About the Author

Prof. Radvansky received his B.A. from Cleveland State University under the supervision of Mark Ashcraft and Ben Wallace, and his MA. and PhD from Michigan State University in 1992 under the supervision of Rose T. Zacks. He has been a faculty member in the Department of Psychology at the University of Notre Dame since 1993. He is an expert in human memory with over 80 publications. He has served as associated editor for the journals Memory & Cognition, the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, Collabra, and Frontiers in Psychology.

There is sufficient body of evidence to treat neuropeptides as a field of research worthy of a textbook. Dr. Strand who has masterfully pulled together this evidence, states that "one of the most important functions of neuropeptides is the integration of the functions of the brain and the systems of the body." The list of functions is long and broad but Strand covers them well. This book has the lucid consistency of being written by a single author who is an active researcher in the field of neuropeptides and a teacher of graduate courses on neuropeptides. "Neuropeptides" is an excellent overview and source book for students, teachers and researchers. It is readable and clearly organized throughout. As much as is possible in a field where new findings are constantly being made, Strand has defined the major body of knowledge that makes a basis for a textbook on neuropeptides. The book is organized in two parts: the general characteristics of neuropeptides and the second, neuropeptide families and their regulatory role. Nineteen chapters in all, full of figures, diagrams and tables of summarizing information. Dr. Strand does justice to the literature without overwhelming the reader. She provides a scholarly basis for her chapters with sufficient references backing each chapter, plus a useful list of books and literature reviews relevant to the topic. In summary, "Neuropeptides" is an excellent textbook. The book is perfect for a graduate course or upper-undergraduate level. It is also a great book for anyone working on a particular neuropeptide, to be used whenever they lose sight of the larger field of research that has been established on neuropeptides and want to understand it.

Given the complexity and rapid growth of research in neuropeptides it is perhaps not surprising that few texts have attempted to give an overview of this field. We should, therefore, be grateful to Fleur Strand for her well-written and comprehensive monograph. The author is an experienced neuroscientist who has been actively involved in research and teaching on the subject of neuropeptides, and the book is a coherent and readable volume that provides a great deal of valuable information to advanced students and others who are interested in neuropeptides. The book is well prepared with clear illustrations, and a comprehensive bibliography and index. The author provides an easily understood review of the many different experimental approaches needed to study the genes, receptors distribution, biosynthesis, release and actions of the neuropeptides. These include molecular neurobiology techniques, immunohistochemical-mapping procedures, the use of genetically engineered animals and studies of peptide actions at the cellular and systemic levels, using neurochemical, neurophysiological and behavioral analyses. A section on the relationship between neuropeptides, stress and the immune system is particularly well prepared, as is the explanation of the physiological roles of neuropeptides in the broader context of biology and evolution. Each chapter concludes with a detailed summary of the conclusions drawn, highlighting the main concepts, which makes for easy review. A concluding section on invertebrate neuropeptides again mixes peptides of neural and non-neural origin but provides a valuable overview of the evolution and biological importance of peptides as chemical signalling molecules.

THE BEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ!!!

Neuropeptides is the best book I have ever read! I cannot express how wonderful it is! It was at the top of my x-mas list last year, and since receiving it I have come to value it even more. Strand does a wonderful job of putting together the most up-to-date literature to explain what is known about the neuropeptides. The coverage is extensive also, going from molecular aspects of each neuropeptide to physiological role, and in some cases even to behavior. I feel this is a must have for all graduate students of neuroendocrinology or endocrinology, and this is definately a good reference for researchers in the area.

The Design Warrior's Guide to FPGAs describes not only everything you need to know to start designing FPGAs, but also how the art came to be in its current state...Unlike many in the EDA industry, Maxfield doesn't forget that chips go on boards: One chapter looks at PCB considerations of FPGA Design...I must admit that when I first saw the book, I imagined reading it would be something of a slog as so many technical books are. Upon opening the book, I was delighted to discover that Maxfield's writing style actually makes reading the book more of a romp in the part. There are portions of the book that I intended to just scan but found myself sucked into reading in full...The Design Warrior's Guide to FPGAs will be a great source of knowledge to the FPGA newcomer. It will also provide new insights and broaden the veteran designer's knowledge of the field. But most of all it is a fun and engaging read for anyone for whom electronics design is more than a 9-to-5 job. About the Author
Clive "Max" Maxfield received a BS in Control Engineering from Sheffield Polytechnic, England in 1980. He began his career as a mainframe CPU designer for International Computers Limited (ICL) in Manchester, England. Max now finds himself a member of the technical staff (MTS) at Intergraph Electronics, Huntsville, Alabama. Max is the author of dozens of articles and papers appearing in magazines and at technical conferences around the world. Max's main area of interest are currently focused in the analog, digital, and mixed-signal simulation of integrated circuits and multichip modules.

Great general culture book, but lacking technical content.

I gave this book 3 stars, but maybe it should get more, because on one hand this is a great book to read, and you learn a lot of what I call general culture from it. But I missed mostly of what I wanted from it so I got frustrated during the reading.

Let me explain. I'm an electrical engineer with quite some experience, mainly in the analogue/physics/microwave etc... area, but I completely 'missed the FPGA train'. Soon I'll have to plunge into FPGA design, and I thought that this book (together with a VHDL textbook) would get me started. I read through the book from cover to cover (it is an easy and fun read!), and I have the feeling that I can now go and chat with just any experienced FPGA designer, I'll be able to keep up appearances over the coffee, I'm aware of what happens on the market, what were former habits, what's trendy right now etc...

But if that same designer takes me to his office to really discuss technical issues I'll flunk. All the content in the book is on the superficial coffee corner discussion level (which doesn't mean it isn't interesting to know this). Reading the book replaces discussions over coffee during the last five years with FPGA design engineers. But a book that is supposed to be a design guide, should, to me, include concrete, realistic, worked-out case studies: put the blah-blah to work. And that's what's terribly missing in this book: no worked-out examples, exercises, problems, and that's what I thought the book was going to offer me, to get me started. And that's what disappointed me, hence 3 stars.

On the positive side, it is true that - if somehow you manage to learn to really work with FPGAs somewhere else - the general culture provided in this book is formidable. In fact, I think this book is perfect for non-technical managers who have to take high-level decisions and have to learn to talk to their technically minded collaborators. But it is not enough for the technical manager who has to take architectural decisions and it is utterly frustrating for the engineer in the trenches if he doesn't get his working knowledge elsewhere.

Also the fun style of the book, which has almost no prerequisites concerning electronics, is a great plus. So if this book were titled 'Boost up your general culture about FPGAs' I'd have given it easily 5 stars.

The Middle-Manager's Guide to Sounding Like You Know Something About FPGAs

I am an EE with no previous FPGA experience. Some of the reviews here made me think this book might be a good stepping stone. Completely wrong. The title of the book is misleading, in my opinion. For the engineer wanting to get started using FPGAs this book is utterly without merit. Why did I give it any stars then? Well, I'm assuming that the nebulously defined 'wide audience' the book was really written for is non-technical managers who need enough of an understanding of common acronyms and terminology to impress their even-less-technical bosses, accounting, and HR people and to be able to relay communications without garbling the message too badly. The author devotes a tremendous amount of space to making sure you know how to pronounce the relevant acronyms like 'FPGA', 'SRAM', etc. The author also sedulously avoids any 'brass tacks' kind of information in an effort to keep his book from becoming obsolete too soon. In my opinion this strategy is like making something useless to begin with, so it won't *become* useless later. Having read this book (it's a fast read: low information density, much repetition, large margins (for acronym pronunciation and largely irrelevant history trivia), and big print.) I think a manager needing a survey of FPGAs and especially terminology might find this useful. To anyone wanting to actually implement something in an FPGA look somewhere else.

So, tell me again what I am supposed to do???

All these nifty block diagrams and acronymes, but I still don't know how to work with an FPGA. I would have liked to see at least one concrete example of how to make an FPGA do something. This book is not for the beginner in FPGA's.
