About the Author
Jeffry A. Frieden is Professor of Government at Harvard University. He specializes in the politics of international monetary and financial relations. Frieden is the author of Currency Politics: The Political Economy of Exchange Rate Politics and (with Menzie Chinn) of Lost Decades: The Making of America’s Debt Crisis and the Long Recovery. His previous books include Global Capitalism: Its Fall and Rise in the Twentieth Century; Debt, Development, and Democracy: Modern Political Economy and Latin America, 1965–1985; and Banking on the World: The Politics of American International Finance. He is also the co-author or co-editor of many other books on related topics. His articles on the politics of international economic issues have appeared in a wide variety of scholarly and general interest publications.

David A. Lake is the Jerri-Ann and Gary E. Jacobs Professor of Social Sciences and Distinguished Professor of Political Science at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). He is, most recently, the author of Hierarchy in International Relations. His other books include Entangling Relations: American Foreign Policy in Its Century and Power, Protection and Free Trade: International Sources of U.S. Commercial Strategy, 1887–1939. In addition, he is co-editor of 10 volumes and author of over 80 articles and book chapters on international relations, international political economy, and American foreign policy. He is Associate Dean of Social Sciences and Director of the Yankelovich Center for Social Science Research at UCSD. In 2013, he received the UCSD’s Chancellor’s Associates Awards for Excellence in Research in Humanities and Social Sciences.

The previous (and superior) edition of "The Portable Dorothy Parker" with a slightly different title

What's great about "The Collected Dorothy Parker" is that the contents of the book are identical to the previous edition of "The Portable Dorothy Parker", which I'd had since 1980 or so. My copy of the previous edition of "The Portable" was so old that the pages were falling out, having become detached from the binding. The newer edition of "The Portable" edited by Marion Meade I do not like. Ms. Meade decided to omit certain of Mrs. Parker's book reviews because the books are either out of print or no longer read by anyone, and that is so not the point of reading a book review by Mrs. Parker. It is her writing of those reviews that makes reading the reviews so entertaining, and they're all worth reading. "The Collected Dorothy Parker" is simply the previous edition of "The Portable Dorothy Parker" as published and sold in the U.K., currently available for purchase in the U.S., and I'm so happy to have it because my new copy isn't falling apart at the seams and is word for word identical to that superior previous edition of "The Portable". There are other things I don't like about the Marion Meade edition of "The Portable", but it makes for good tinder in getting your fireplace going if you pull the pages out one at a time and crumple them before apply a lighted match. So I completely approve of "The Collected Dorothy Parker" and recommend buying it instead of the Marion Meade edition of "The Portable Dorothy Parker".

A Contribution to the Literature of Mental Health

This is a fine book: a thorough, clear, well-organized, and readable treatment of obsessional-compulsive disorder. Even more striking is to have, in place of the disembodied voice of an academic, a compassionate perspective that offers insight into the often secret world these youngsters inhabit. Though it is a reference handbook, it is amply illustrated with stories of individuals whose puzzling behaviors can easily be misunderstood. Their worlds come alive with alternating scenarios, practical suggestions, and research findings. It also helps to see how disruptive this condition is to a student's ability to make progress in any given day, how easy it would be to misinterpret the behavior, and when that happens, to realize the grave damage to a child's self-esteem. The book is written for school personnel, but parents could also gain a valuable understanding of what they can expect from their child's school environment.

As a special ed teacher (now retired), I know that until we have a student who shows signs of a specific condition, we don't take the time to learn more about it. Because of the prevalence of OCD to varying degrees (often side by side with other conditions), and this book's many good recommendations for help in managing classroom incidents and attitudes, a copy belongs on the professional reading shelf of every school. If only one person (teacher, secretary, paraprofessional) could offer a child the understanding this book represents, it would serve as a life preserver amid the relentless demands of OCD and the day-to-day experience of school. If a workshop isn't possible, this book is the next best thing.

The author recently presented a workshop for literacy tutors who work with incarcerated youth which I happened to attend. I was impressed by the depth and breadth of her knowledge of the subject, and was persuaded of the importance of recognizing symptoms of OCD so that early intervention can help offset severe long-term illness. A wonderful contribution to the literature of mental health.

Best book I've seen to teach teachers about OCD

I've been a teacher for 32 years and I also have OCD. Dr Adams has written a direct,informative and resource filled book for us teachers and all educational personal on Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. I've had OCD since I was 29 years old and can tell you from experience she has hit the mark with practical advice and specific information about how OCD affects our students, our children. This is a must read if you are a teacher or anyone in the educational system. I think it a must read for anyone to understand OCD! Believe me, Dr Adams has written an easy to read book and clarified a complicated misunderstood disorder. Highly recommended.

Good for a laugh

A series of strung-together stories, with the overarching theme of globalisation and how it effects us. Football is a good example of the contradictions of the modern world, of course, because it draws us all together (except, perhaps, the US) but also can have all kinds of nationalist bollocks attached. It was amazing to read how Milosevic's shock troops in ethnic cleansing were Red Star Belgrade football hooligans.

Altogether, pretty good read, and from an interesting perspective - the new generation of footy-loving Yanks.

Good read. But somewhat dated now

Good read. But somewhat dated now. It doesn't explain the world as much as it chronicle Foer's journey through the football world in Europe. Enlightening and entertaining in turns.
