Students with OCD: A Handbook for School Personnel is the definitive resource on obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in the school environment. Providing a detailed window into this often misunderstood and overlooked disorder, this comprehensive guide is the key to changing the lives of the estimated 1 out of 100 students who battle OCD at any given time. Empowered to better recognize, understand, and work with the disorder, parents, school personnel, and health professionals become the critical link between OCD and education--allowing bright and promising students to realize their full potential. This book is divided into six parts: Part I is an introduction to what OCD is and why it is so important for school personnel to know about it. Part II provides an overview of obsessions and compulsions in young people with OCD, how they frequently manifest in school, and other important characteristics of obsessions and compulsions. Part III focuses on a number of key issues related to childhood OCD, including prevalence, age at onset, gender, causes, disorders/other difficulties that occur regularly with OCD, and clinical assessment and treatment. Part IV addresses the effects of OCD on school functioning and how school personnel can assist in identifying and referring students with the disorder. Part V is a comprehensive section on school-based treatment for OCD, covering: school-based accommodations and support strategies for students with OCD; special issues related to the school-based treatment of OCD; laws pertaining to educational services for students with OCD; categorizing students with OCD under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004 (IDEA 2004); IDEA, discipline, and OCD behavior; school-based cognitive-behavioral therapy when an outside therapist is involved; and school-based interventions when an outside therapist is not involved. Part VI is the conclusion, which offers some final thoughts about students with OCD.

A Contribution to the Literature of Mental Health
By T K S
This is a fine book: a thorough, clear, well-organized, and readable treatment of obsessional-compulsive disorder. Even more striking is to have, in place of the disembodied voice of an academic, a compassionate perspective that offers insight into the often secret world these youngsters inhabit. Though it is a reference handbook, it is amply illustrated with stories of individuals whose puzzling behaviors can easily be misunderstood. Their worlds come alive with alternating scenarios, practical suggestions, and research findings. It also helps to see how disruptive this condition is to a student's ability to make progress in any given day, how easy it would be to misinterpret the behavior, and when that happens, to realize the grave damage to a child's self-esteem. The book is written for school personnel, but parents could also gain a valuable understanding of what they can expect from their child's school environment.
As a special ed teacher (now retired), I know that until we have a student who shows signs of a specific condition, we don't take the time to learn more about it. Because of the prevalence of OCD to varying degrees (often side by side with other conditions), and this book's many good recommendations for help in managing classroom incidents and attitudes, a copy belongs on the professional reading shelf of every school. If only one person (teacher, secretary, paraprofessional) could offer a child the understanding this book represents, it would serve as a life preserver amid the relentless demands of OCD and the day-to-day experience of school. If a workshop isn't possible, this book is the next best thing.
The author recently presented a workshop for literacy tutors who work with incarcerated youth which I happened to attend. I was impressed by the depth and breadth of her knowledge of the subject, and was persuaded of the importance of recognizing symptoms of OCD so that early intervention can help offset severe long-term illness. A wonderful contribution to the literature of mental health.
