HS cross-country drama at its best!
By XC Clydesdale
This is a delightful romp through the life of a small-town cross-country team as they struggle to overcome their own internal struggles while training to dethrone the state champs. Full of adventure and conflicting personalities, can they pull it all together to win? "Finishing Kick" is an excellent novel for anyone who has experienced the pains and joys of high school cross-country. It helped me relive mine as well as validating my current experiences as a cross-country coach. So nice to see an author salute the best and most underrated high school sport with such a compelling story line.

one of the better young adult fiction audiobooks that I have heard
By AudioBook Reviewer
Finishing Kick is one of the better young adult fiction audiobooks that I have heard in quite some time. The story involves Callie as she is completing her junior year and follows her through her senior season of cross country. The story delves into many aspects of Callie's life during this journey including her friends, her perceived enemies, her romantic interest, and her family including a tenacious younger sister. Her relationship with her younger sister is one of the more intriguing aspects of the book as it isdeveloping. The relationship becomes more complicated as it matures through the story and tests their strengths and weaknesses as individuals.
This relationshipwas a very relatable aspect as a listener, as anyone with siblings can testify to the trials and tribulations of dealings with these relatives in the high school years. Also, Callie's relationship with the complicated character of Mattie is another compelling affiliation that causes you to internalize their feelings as their story unfolds. Mattie is not a character you like from the start of the book, andyou definitely become curiousto listento her exchangeswith Callie from the start to the finish. The characters were well developed andstayed true to the character through the book, making it a smooth listen. Although I have mentioned a couple of the interestingrelationships in the story above that impacted me as a listener, the best part of the story is the inspirational story that Calliehasis the relationship she has with herself. She becomes captain of the cross country team and must manage all of this chaos and has shockingly little faith in herself, but with the help of a very insightful coach, she shines in the end.
This is my first listen of the narrator Annette Romano. She did really well with this story, giving everything to the listener from the light-hearted humor during the casual runs with twins Anna & Hannah to the intensity during the final race. I would enjoy another listen from this narrator and I believe this is a good genre for her.

A Truly Great Running Novel, Written by a Man, But With an Uncanny Female Perspective
By Shawn H
In his novel, Finishing Kick, Paul Duffau captures all the effort, dedication, beauty and, above all, teamwork, of high school cross country. For most young runners, high school cross country is the pinnacle and climax of their running experience. A relative handful of young high school runners earn college scholarships, and just a tiny handful of these go on to additional running success after college. However, the vast majority of both distance running's superstars and its "also-rans" can look back on their high school cross country years and recognize that those were some of the happiest, most fulfilling times of their lives. In Finishing Kick, author Duffau, a man in his 50s, is somehow able to channel the hearts and minds of the teenage girls who comprise the Cloverland High School Cross Country team. Duffau's protagonist, young Callie, a high school senior, is not the fastest runner on her Cloverland High School cross country team. She's not even the second or third fastest. However, there is something in Callie that "Doc," her very perceptive coach, can see. What Doc sees is leadership, so he makes her the team captain. Callie's never been a leader, but now she's in charge of leading a team of mostly better runners, some of whom have very strong and conflicting personalities. Cloverland High has never been to the Washington State Championship. But one day at practice, Callie tells her teammates that not only can they make it to the State Championship, they can win it and dethrone perennial State Champion Fairchild Academy. Can Callie pull everyone together? If so, it's going to take very hard work, cohesive teamwork, and, as Doc says, a touch of luck. I highly recommend this book to runners and non-runners alike.
