Helen Keller

I loved this book because it made sense. It told about Helen Keller's life and as a blind and deaf kid and adult . It also told about where she went to school and about the places she went .It told about who taught Helen how to read and write and talk! I also liked this book because it was hard to put it down when I had to go somewhere. This book also told about her little sister and how Helen got sick and turned blind and deaf and how her teacher died. This book was great! You should read it.

Good series, not so good individual volume

While I as a school librarian appreciate the popularity of the "Who Was...?" junior biography series, I find the quality uneven. Other volumes have been wonderful, but I found the Helen Keller book to be awkwardly written, including many pages where the author jumped from one aspect of Ms. Keller's life to another, with little or no transition. The author should have been aware that Helen's father was called "Captain" as a title; it is not correct to refer to him just as "Captain" as if it were his given name. If the book is truly written for up to 10-year-old children, it falls into the lower reading level end, with extremely short and choppy sentences... not a challenge for the 4th and 5th-graders who will be reading it.

Biographies for Beginners

Wonderful introduction to biographies for the early reader set (6-10 yrs old, depending on reading ability). It provides enough info to be useful, but not so much that the child is bogged down and loses interest. The series is fabulous.

The end is getting closer, but has not yet arrived, in this fourth entry in the TUNNELS series. It all started with Will and Chester digging tunnels, trying to find Will's missing archaeologist father. After digging DEEPER and experiencing FREEFALL into the subterranean depths of the Earth in books two and three, the two boys continue to battle the malevolent Styx, and to survive in book four—but in different arenas. Chester joins Drake and a possible Styx ally on the surface, while Will, his father, and Elliott (the girl Drake trained to fight) encounter pyramids and a World War II German Army deep in the bowels of the Earth. The Styx are hot on their trail because the teens stole the virus created to destroy all humans. There is tragedy and triumph as the action switches back and forth, following the adventures of both sets of characters. This novel begins with a bang, and the pace never falters. There is very little background information, so newcomers should start with Tunnels. But fans of the series are going to have a hard time putting it down. There is a lot of action; lively dialogue; diabolical villains and feisty teens; clever cat-like companion hunters; things that blow up; torture and mind manipulation; family and friends in danger; and trust and betrayal. Nonstop adventure--looking forward to more

In CLOSER, three of our heroes are stranded in a strange world called the "Land of the Second Sun," which is located at the very center of the earth. But none of them are overly concerned with their predicament. In fact, they all feel relatively safe and even satisfied with their circumstances. In the case of Dr. Burrows, he is ecstatic to discover a new world to study and spends his hours crawling over the bizarre pyramids, recording everything in his journal. His son, Will, is happy to help, grateful to be with him and even more thankful to spend some time alone with Elliot as she scouts out the area, finding food and shelter.

However, their peace is about to end. Another group of people call this place home: Germans who sought a safe refuge during WWII and who have successfully created a new civilization called New Germania. But even they aren't the real threat to Will and company; that comes when the evil Rebecca twins finally catch up to our heroes. They are desperate to recover the vial of the nasty virus that Will and Elliot had stolen, and they will do anything --- even murder --- to get what they want.

Will's best friend, Chester, finally reaches the earth's surface again, along with Martha, the strange, somewhat unstable woman they had encountered in the depths. Chester is eager to ditch her and finally get back home to let his parents know he's okay. But Martha has developed an attachment to Chester and isn't about to let him go. The "warped, psycho granny," as Chester calls her, locks him in the closet of an abandoned house and has no intentions of ever losing him. Chester can only think of one way out of his nightmarish situation: try to get a signal to Drake.

Meanwhile, Drake has been rescued from almost certain death by a former Limiter who claims to be Elliot's father. He proposes to help Drake in exchange for assistance in getting Elliot back safe and sound. Drake has enough experience in the espionage games to know not to trust anybody, but with Eddy's help, Drake could put an end to the Styx plans of creating new viruses they want to use on the surface population in order to take over the entire world, inside and out. Dare Drake trust a former enemy? Dare he not?

This fourth installment of the Tunnels series is smoking! With our heroes split up into different parts of the globe (both inside and out), CLOSER is almost like many separate stories interwoven into one big book (and it is big at over 500 pages). The point of view is constantly switching among Will, Chester, Drake and others as they all battle their own exciting circumstances, which keeps the story fresh and renewed with plenty of cliffhangers to propel the pages. Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams offer lots of espionage, military-type tactics and weaponry, airplanes, helicopters and motorcycles, a wonderful sense of imagination, and even brief flaunts of humor. Their characters are interesting and well-rounded, displaying both faults and feelings along with bouts of heroism. The authors also do a tremendous job comparing different cultures and governments, which is one of the book's themes.

Gordon and Williams have two more books planned for the series, with the next one titled SPIRAL. So the end is near, but there are still mega amounts of pages to enjoy in the meantime. CLOSER offers a nonstop, subterranean adventure with a steady supply of surprises and suspense.

A different ending

I love this series- great for kids. This book keeps you interested the whole way through with a great plot, action scenes and many different story lines. The ending of the book left me a little disappointed. I am not sure if the series will continue, but I was hoping for a better closing to all the story lines.

Good book. Lots of twists and turns. The valley of the second Sun and the hollow earth theory were especially interesting. The underground WWII era German city they stumbled upon was very imaginative. Best book in the series yet by far.

This story is extremely well written. It is a dark romance that centers around a dominant man intent on seeking revenge. Add in some hot sex scenes, secrets, and revenge and you have yourself a fantastic novel. Fellow readers do be warned though. This story is very dark. It contains material that may disturb some. Also, it ends in a cliffhanger leaving you hanging off the edge of your seats because you need the next book to see what happens. So, if your interested in a dark, action-packed but sexy novel, I would highly recommend this one. It is twisted, raw, and gritty. A must read for fans of the dark romance genre! 2 thumbs up.

A Review of Echo: A Dark Billionaire Romance (Bleeding Hearts, Book 1) by A. Zavarelli

This was the first book I've ever read by this author. The cover was the first thing that caught my eye, but it was the blurb that sucked me in so hard that I just had to get it. I was lucky to find it when it was on a special deal, so I snapped it up and started reading it right away. We first meet Brighton when she is sixteen and worried about her twin brother, who is going to be sent to prision the next day for something she swears he didn't do.

Although Brayden keeps telling her that he killed a family by running them off the road, she just knows that he couldn't have done this and he is covering for someone. He tells her that when she gets the chance to get out of the dump they have lived in for as long as she can remember, that she needs to take that opportunity and make something of herself.

He sends her outside to get away from the noise from his friends and get some air. When she goes out, she finds someone sitting in her chair, playing with her Rubiks cube. He was definitely older than them, but there was a chemical reaction between the two of them that was undeniable. She never had the chance to learn his name though, since Brayden came out just after their kiss and told her to go back inside. The stranger said they would meet again and maybe he would teach her how to play the game.

Five years and three thousand miles later, we find Brighton in San Franciso. She ends up without a job or place to stay and only the kindness of a new friend to rely on. Nicole promises to get her a job with the company she works for and offers to let her stay in her apartment as well. That's when she meets her stranger again. He is the owner of the company she is now working for. It looks like things are finally looking up for her, when the other shoe drops.

She gets a package from someone with proof that her brother wasn't driving the car that caused the deaths of the people he is in prison for. However, for this proof, he wants her to sign a contract saying he has complete control of her for the next six months.

"How far would you go to save someone you love? Would you give up your body? Your mind? Your heart? I did and it cost me everything. He says he owns me. And it’s true. I’ve signed over complete control of my body and life for six months to a man I don’t know. Five years he’s been planning this. They say revenge is a dish best served cold. But my blackmailer serves it up white hot. He’s addicted to my innocence, and I’m addicted to him. He likes to hurt me. I love to let him. He brings me to life. He sets me free. This book ends on a humdinger of a cliffhanger, so be aware of that. If you don't like to be left hanging, wait until the next book is out and buy them at that time. But, I definitely recommend this series. The characters are extremely well developed, with lots of secondary characters as well and the writing style of the author is phenominal.

Definitely not what I expected

WOW, this story is definitely different. It's all about Lies..the lies parents tell their children. The lies that criminals tell themselves when they do horrendous act. The lies those who seek revenge tell themselves in justification. The lies lovers tell each other. It's dark and dangerous and at times confusing . It's raw and violent. But it sucks you in until you can feel yourself walking in their shoes.

This book is awesome!

I was able to learn Indesign very quickly using this book especially to create newsletters. This book was instrumental in helping me learn the product within 30 days. My organization loved my very first draft of the Newsletter that I created from this book and now I just tailor it more to the organization.

Love this book

I have just started into this book, but so far I love it. I started from page 1, because I have never used InDesign before. I have seen it used, but I never used it myself. The book so far is very clearly written and it goes over every detail. What I love are the QR code videos. When you can't quite get what the author/instructor is trying to say, these little videos come in very handy. I also love that there is an electronic version of the book.

Great reference guide for inDesign

A great reference book for inDesign that I always keep at my desk.

I got tired of googling how-to's for things in inDesign and purchased this book instead. The problem with googling is that the person who is answering the questions you have no clue if they even know what you are talking about. You could spend 30 minutes searching the internet or just a few minutes reading a section of this book. Clear instructions, clear pictures, all-around great book to own if you do a lot of work in inDesign.

Almost perfect now !

I am not a collector and I was not a big fan of the cartoon or comic books, but I really, really loved the toy line back then. So I am not much interested in character personality and price guides. What I really enjoy are the pics of the vehicles and figures. And I must say they are very well done in this second edition. If you read my review for the first edition you will notice that the pics of the vehicles were my main disappointment. Huge upgrade now!

So bottom line is: This second edition is almost perfect and I truly recommend this book.

Following are some topics I am looking forward in a third edition (I hope Mark reads this!):

1) The pics of the vehicles could be a little larger. Let's say no more than two vehicles per page. This would surely increase the number of pages to almost 500. If this is a problem (e.g. editors target book price), make it a "deluxe" edition instead of a regular third edition.

2) Following the "deluxe" stuff, please add a hard cover. That would easily make this also a good coffee table book.

3) Add a detailed index for the vehicles and figures.

4) I really miss the artwork presented in the boxes and carded figures. There should be a dedicated section on this subject. I believe it is possible to put all the artwork in 10 pages in a reasonable size. Also, it would be nice to track down Hasbro's main GI Joe artists and credit them.

5) In order to improve the background history of the 3 3/4" GI Joe toy line, it would be nice to add at least one or two pages mentioning the history of the 12 inches line.

6) Add a few pages mentioning the GI Joe toy releases around the World, like Action Force in Europe or Comandos em Acao in Brazil. Of course I'm not asking for a full price guide and detailed information on all possible International variations. Just, say, 5 pages mentioning its existence and including assorted images, curiosities and trivia.

7) Try to recover that real world weapons and vehicles comparison that was cut from the second edition. I think we can read some interesting stuff here.

Well, I guess that's all, folks. Once again, these are my personal desires for a future release, but 'till then, this second edition rocks!

More relevant as time passes

I have read this book six times. It only gets more relevant as time passes. The reality is that Tom Clancy foresaw what terrorism could become on a world stage. His choice of cause for the ideology is interesting, but you can put any purpose as a motivation for their despicable deeds. A multinational anti-terror strike-force is just what the world needs. It's full of the signature Clancy action-on-every-page. You don't want to pass on this one!

Good story with classic Clancy attention to detail. I wanted to read the John Clark books in order to see how Rainbow was developed and how these stories play into some of the current Jack Jr./Chavez adventures. Clancy references prior passages from Clark's past but not enough to distract from the current story-just enough to make one want to read or re-read past books and continue with the current series.

It's a bit long like all Clancy books but worth it. A nice build up to the conclusion and you are definitely cheering for the good guys by the end. It is intelligent in that the good guys are not only as smart as they seem to be and the bad guys aren't dumb all of the time. Some great twists that keep you reading up to the finale. Have fun with this book! The trip is worth it!
